Update to my last post. I am now wearing my 5167 more often than not. It has become my go-to watch and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Wow....why does that 5167A look so utterly stunning? It just looks gorgeous, all beat up.

I do wonder if those of us (and I include myself in this) worry more about 'damaging' a watch that we know is appreciating in value? I do worry about wearing my 5167A far more than I do, say, my Calatrava - which I know is on a rapidly downward spiral to being worth next to zero one day!

In some respects, given I have no intention of selling my 5167A, this is absurd and mentally I might be happier if I knew it were going down in value commensurate with the dings and scratches being lovingly added to it!!

Think of it as patina - who knows, in 20 years, that may make it a rare beast indeed and with an even higher value.

Not sure that common perception is really true. All Swiss watches are built to certain guidelines which includes a standard level of shock resistance to be called "Swiss Made". All Swiss watches can be worn for everyday normal use. The new Rolex paraflex shock absorbers in some of their newest models may add a meaningful increase in shock resistance over other brands from the case. Truth be known no Rolex or any mechanical, self winding or not, watch is really suited to heavy vibration or the fast speeds, abrupt impacts and torque from racket sports or golf. When you look at a movement you can see how finely tuned with super small parts and delicate an escapement really is.

Patek aquanaut

If you have to care about a scratch you should buy a hublot

My concern with an Aquanaut as a daily wearer (as mine was for a few years when I first got it) has nothing to do with aesthetic blemishes, but internal damage associated with such dings and bangs. Mine found itself in the shop after fewer than three years requiring a complete overhaul. That was when I got an IWC pilot to alternate with.

Exactly. What’s the definition of “beater”? I’m wearing 5711s every day.....does that make them beaters”

To me; beater means any watch you aren't scared to get scratched.

It can be liberating to have this in your collection, especially for travel

Keegan Allen's and John Mayer's 5164A, respectively as shown on the Hodinkee Talking Watches episodes. Lots of scuffs and little nicks. Clearly signs of the watches being loved and worn while making lifetime memories. Makes me feel good about wearing mine every day.Screenshot_20190608-152906_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20190608-153006_YouTube.jpgScreenshot_20190608-153021_YouTube.jpg

Daily watch, sure. Beat the hell out of it? No. Would I wear my 5167 in the water and for light physical activity? Sure.

I came across a Sales Rep at an Omega AD that was wearing a Speedy that looked as though it had been dropped down a garbage disposal. Not my thing. Some people are from the "Watches are TOOLS," camp, but I wouldn't spend $20k on a watch to beat to death.

I call my 5167 sports-curious.
Obligatory wrist shot. And yes I wear mine every day.

Perhaps a better term would be 'sports inspired'? What term do you feel would better represent sporty looking timepieces from Patek Philippe?

5167 rubber straps maybe a beater watch, and frankly to most people looking from 5 meters away it looks no better than Casio G shock. The steel bracelet may be more delicate.
The aquanaut steel bracelet design looks absolutely awful, aquanaut looks better in rubber straps.

Nautilus is Patek answer to Royal Oak

Aquanaut is Patek answer to G Shock

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but it’s not universal. It’s feather light on the strap, and a little more substantial on the bracelet. The bracelet will scratch like any other steel bracelet but it is no way delicate. A lot of us like both looks and the ability to swap.

I want to thank you and all watch collectors who feel that way about the 5167 bracelet, without you I would never have been able to buy an Aquanaut. But I don't get it, what makes it so awful?

That's one of my favorite parts of the 5167. I heard the term "Stealth Wealth" the other day, and while the financial aspect of ownership isn't as relevant for me as quality is, I do enjoy usually being the only one in a room to know what it is. I do catch people glancing at it a lot, mostly because it's an eye catcher.

As for the bracelet, I think either looks fine... but prefer the rubber myself. Although, I cannot wear it under a suit. Just doesn't "suit" me.

Mine is so light I hardly notice it. At least compared to my WG sub. I like both in different ways. But when I travel I take the 5167 because it looks like a timex and does not attract attention.

Truth be told I love wearing my 5167a but if I know there’s a chance I'm doing any activity with a decent probability I’ll smack it into something, I quickly switch to my hulk or grand Seiko snowflake.

The aquanaut bracelet (having owned it) is awesome. I loved it (was my first patek ever). The difficult part is it gets compared to the Nautilus bracelet too often. The Nautilus bracelet is best in class so a pretty damn good bracelet like the aquanaut gets a bad rap. The large links also draws some comparisons to ladies watches.

I agree 100%.

IMO, showing that type of abuse for an expensive timepiece shows lack of respect for one’s hard work, “tool watch” or not.

Unfortunately, for most of us, what we do with our watch is not determined merely by whether or not it will be functional afterward.
