Is it better to store a new watch in a safe or a watch winder? An explanation of why would be helpful too. Thank you.

Are you just storing the watch for investment purposes?

For the least amount of wear on the watch, keep it in the safe.

The only way to stop all wear and tear on a mechanical watch is to let is sit in a clean and dry environment without running.

A winder will keep the parts of the watch moving and the watch will wear almost like you had it on your wrist all the time (except for the possibility of scratches and dings due to actual wearing of the watch).

SDB usually hold alot of moisture. As long as its a Oyster style case with back and crown secured it should not be a problem. If it was a dress watch or pocket watch, you would want to put in a sealed bag with a couple of those silicone moisture absorbing packets.

umm a safety deposit box should always be in a cool and dry environment unless your bank is a poorly run, drug lord held facility in the tropics. But seriously if you are going to place it into storage consider one of those plastic watch cases and some dry packets to boot.

yup i agree with him. it can protect watch from wearing out.

Mine are stored in my safe on autowinders. They are always ready to swap out and go out on the town.

I would not store a watch on a winder long term.

I would keep it is a safe place.

Be careful of magnetic fields in some safes. My wife's Breitling was stored too close to the door mechanism bolts/solenoid (electric lock). Her watch became magnetized and was running wicked fast. :(

i keep my vintage 1968 timex waferthin in two airtight plastic bags folded within a small glasses case. since the watch will be in there for probably another year or two before its removed for restoration, im also looking into getting silicone freshness packets to put in the safe.
