Icon9 Buy a rolex: Only for pleasure or to do business too ?

Las week I did:

Sold YM 16622 (year 2008): 6.000 no papers neither box
Sold GMT M II 116710 (year 2013): 6.200 no papers neither box
Bought Sub No date 114060 “NEW”: 6.800 Full papers no box

As a result in my pocket: 5.400 cash

Question is if I made a good deal besides I like my new watch. Is it important to take it into account ?

Thank you very much indeed !!!

The prices you sold for seem about right, sub decent price.I like the sub the best of those 3 so new sub and 5400 in cash sounds good to me.If your happy that's all that matters.

Well you sold two to get one, if that make you happy . . .

You need to subtract the cost of the first two from your net to see if this is a "business"

I buy/wear for pleasure. Wouldn't do anything rash or "stupid" in flipping to get another watch. However, I have lost some money (a little) to move on to another model.

Again, for pleasure.

I don't regard any of my watches as a business purchase, to be honest.

If I did, I would be a LOT more frugal about buying and flipping.

And, have a LOT less fun. It's all about the fun...for me, anyway.

Obviously we are watch fans and buy to wear and enjoy, but as Rolexes have strong resale if there is a price rise, they can be sold at a small profit, but that is an ancillary benefit and not something to consider much beforehand.

Now if you can claim Rolex as a necessary business expense then that's a different story and a business I want to get into.

Pleasure. My problem is the watches I own that have appreciated in value I have no desire to sell because of the stories and they will be handed down to my kids so it is all pleasure.

the thing about buying and selling is that as soon as you buy that watch is for sale.
normally when you want to sell you get desperate and then mistakes come(normally lowering prices) 5400 in pocket sounds about right to me, you enjoyed them and got "your money back".
me personally i like rotation so i need more than 2
what are you going to do with the 5400?buy a watch or stash it?

Pure pleasure , but it helps to be smart so you don't get burned...buy at the righ price and I limit my purchases to 3-4 brands (Rolex included) that I know will either retain their price or have little loss. " I TRY "

Sounds like you have a $5400 head start on your next watch.

Pleasure with a side of business. I like most brands but will only shell out real money on a Rolex. If IT hits the fan and liquidation is necessary it's nice to know I'll be okay.

I tried doing the business thing with lower end watches ($1-300), and it's not worth the time IMO. Maybe when I was in college or something, it may have worked well.

With these higher end watches..no way lol. I don't have the cash or stomach for it. I'm sure it's lucrative but IMO there are enough trusted sellers on the market fighting for business. I wouldn't be able to handle a customer wanting to return a 10k watch, or worse, telling me no watch was in the box.

It may sound like fun at first, but dealing with the public and selling expensive items to strangers can lead to some serious headaches! Not to mention the competition.IMO, buy a Rolex to enjoy and maybe use it to flip for your next one.

You got the Sub for a fair price.

You received $12,200 for the two watches you sold. So the question is - how much did you pay for them?
