One cannot eliminate the risk, but they can reduce it by their conduct and thoughtful planning.

Here's a quiz for you to determine your risk

Vacation option 1. You've just arrived in Mogadishu checked into the hotel and are planning on going out on the town solo for the evening. You're wearing a short sleeve shirt, and your YG Daytona, with matching Rolex pinky ring and Gold neck chain. Before you leave the hotel you pound down 3 or 4 Martini's.

Vacation option 2. You landed in Dubai early in the morning, wearing your SS DJ36, slacks, dress shirt and you are going to take a cab to visit friends who live there, non-drinkers so you will have Tea, then while still daylight say goodbye to friends, cab to the Dubai Mall, and stroll back to the hotel before dark.

Which of the two present a greater risk of coming home in a bag?

I always bring a nice watch while traveling, but when I venture to a questionable destination I will switch to a Casio or newly purchased Seiko field watch (for EMT squad). On my last cruise I wore a YG Sub and BLNR; but still brought along my Casio.

I bought an Air-King for traveling to maintain Rolex on the wrists but have opted to bring the new Seamaster as it is way more versatile.

And leave the nice ones in the safe of cabin / hotel room?

I would bring my 116500, but not my 116718. The YG gets too much attention

Last year on our family vacation to Mexico, my wife will not let me take any Rolex watch with me. She was OK with taking my Omega Aqua Terra...

On my business trips to Mexico/other countries, I wear one of my Rolex watches and I have never felt uncomfortable.

I'll only take one watch with me when I travel and wear that all the time. Done that with all my watches. Twice I've come home with more watches than I left with.

Option 1 - Mogadishu Airport is notoriously dangerous on landings.

I travel for work extensively. I always wear one of my Rolexs. Tomorrow I head out with the ultimate destination of Seoul Korea (after several stops). My BLNR will be with me. Last summer I walked all over Paris with either my YG Sub or my TT Sky. All are insured. I stay keenly aware of my surroundings. If I get uncomfortable I will stick my hand down into my pocket. I dont enter known dangerous places and I don’t drink. I am not a small man and am able to give an imposing look should I feel uncomfortable. Remember, most criminals are looking for an easy mark. If challenged by armed thugs I would give it up without question.

These threads continue to crack me up. Especially the Europe is dangerous posts. Clearly some of you need to see the world a little more.

I travel everywhere with mine. Common sense will tell anyone who has vision when it's advisable to take it off and slip it into a pocket.

wow, such a diverse group of countries and such a long yet exciting trip. So many advises already. If having your Rolex watch(es) makes this adventure more satisfying, then just be street smart (& insure themas many have advised). Personally, I can be such a scatter brain sometimes, I prefer not having another thing to worry about so I bring a much less valuable piece. It's just me. Best.

For those of you who don't know London well, this is why I am super careful in the UK.

Thieves on Mopeds... That's how they do it in the UK.

I'm vacation now at a pretty high end area in Mexico. I left my nice watches at home and wear a Panerai here.I feel it is under the radar but spotted an AP ROC and a Sub near me on the beach.

The danger of wearing a Rolex while traveling is you'll look down and remember you haven't visited the AD's yet.......you'll come home with two watches, and sneaking that box into the house can be tricky.

I travel for living (one international trip per week) and nowadays I always take 2 watches with me.
An older Rolex on oyster that is just comfy and under radar and a leather band vintage piece.

I go everywhere: Africa, Asia, Europe..... for me the DJ 36 on oyster is the best traveller.
I also had the 42mm Explorer 2, never used the GMT function on it. The Sub is ok but the 36mmDJ is simply more comfy and more versatile.

What I would avoid taking is a 2tone or yelow gold piece. It would attract unwanted attention. Same with any colourful models......but it all depends where are you going to be and how much of a seasoned traveller you are.

The only one time I felt a bit funny is when I got lost in Luanda, Angola. I often go on a long city walk on my layovers. I was wearing my Explorer2 but my clothes/shoes were very plain/old (on purpose) and the watch was covered by a long sleeve. I was ok....

Didn't see that story but its funny.... Distraction theft..... Woo, I pulled!

A gold digger at the extreme!

Although ultimately a theft, a bit different from being mugged by knife in broad daylight...

And four watches stolen in one go - that's definitely a big snatch...
