I waited - AD called.

PM would have been my alternate.

I bought a white 116500 early last year when they were around the 16K USD mark. When prices on the 116500 kept going up last year, I sold it and upgraded to the 116519. It was worth every penny of the additional 7K or so I spent to upgrade.

The key is I find the 519 more attractive than the 500, starting with the heft, the dial and the comfort factor. Value factor aside compared with the 500, I just like the watch a lot more.

If you truly like the 500 more than the 519, then the 519 won't do it for you even if both were at the same price. Go with what the heart says. I would generally subscribe to the view that the 519 at MSRP is a much better buy than a 500 at a massive premium, but you have to go with what you like and not what others tell you to like especially when you're spending your own money.

I do know a local collector who was faced with this issue last month. He could have had a 116519LN from an AD at a significant discount (15% off) or a white 116500 at double MSRP. He went with the white 116500 at double MSRP - the 116519LN was only about $2,500 more expensive. Key is he went with what the heart said, though everyone (including me) would tell him the rational choice is the 116519LN.

I'd go PM and never pay the $10K over MSRP for a SS piece. I'm biased though I own the 116515 an d traded a SS Daytona.

I’d buy the 116519 White Gold on OF. I do believe that the SS with white dial is a special watch. I also believe it’s an instant classic - just my opinion. However, with the prices being relatively close I’d go white gold and perhaps leverage that purchase for another desirable model.

The other thing I’d say is that by the time you buy enough to be “on the list” at some AD’s it might be cheaper to just pay the secondary market price. It’s a tough spot with no apparent change in the near future.

Get the white dial if that’s your choice. And if you can fork over $10k, go for it. It might be $15k a year from now.

Have you looked into Tudor Black Bay Chrono?

Its not a Rolex Daytona but its still quite good. You can buy one used for significantly cheaper price untill you can find a Dealer that can put you on the list for the Daytona and deliver it.

Solid piece of advice this. I know it's difficult to avoid thinking about the price, but if you are planning on keeping the watch, then just buy it grey.

Super solid advice. I really like this. Go with the heart. Although, if you have not tried on the watches, it's hard to know where your heart is.

Can’t go wrong with a SS white daytona. It’s one of those watches that will always look good and most likely retain value well.

Quick update: This went, of course, in a different direction than I had planned.

I ended up trading my black SubC (which had been laying in the safe for years - my BLNR and SubC LV are just too similar and I prefer the "color" that they provide) for a 116520 black dial.

I couldn't bring myself to cough up a couple of grand just to have the ceramic bezel Daytona. Also, I've come to quite like the "old school" steel bezel look on the 116520. As to the 519LN, I've decided that it is too much $ right now, especially since I promised my wife to take care of some house stuff this year (new retaining wall, landscaping, etc.).

The Daytona will arrive at my door tomorrow and I am pretty excited about it. If it's as the pictures indicated, it is in pristine condition. I went with a TS here for the first time and the transaction has been super smooth so far.

I will post pics when I get it. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Thank you! That's all I could pull off right now with a clean conscious. It was first sold in 2013 and looks very crisp. I have to admit that I like the fact that it is discontinued. I know there are thousands out there but makes it a tiny bit more special.

No brainer. 116519! It's too bad you can't see them side by side because if you did I think you would agree that the 116519 OF has way more presence. Obviously TEHO and there is no right answer but it's an easy decision for me.
I think the 116500 white pops a little more just because of the contrast between black and white, but the dial on the 116519 is mesmerizing to me!

Fully understand... I have my name down for a few pieces and was thinking about just buying on the grey market and enjoying the watch...when and if my name gets called...then switching to the new one and selling the Grey for break even or perhaps a $$$profit$$$$. Either way you enjoy the watch.

Maybe one day I'll trade the 116520 for a 519 (after it gets a glidelock clasp). DavidSW had one a couple of days ago (think it didn't last long) for 30,5. I was on the fence for a moment but like I said, committed to put some $ into our home. I'm happy with my choice. For now

This is the smart choice!

Congrats! I went through something very similar and ended up getting a white 116520. Also couldn’t justify the cost of a ceramic Daytona and while the OF pm Daytona’s are very nice, I couldn’t pay all that money for a watch on rubber bands.

I traded in my blnr for my Daytona and while I questioned myself in the beginning, now I love the Daytona and glad I made the trade. It sits so well on my wrist and I love the classy look of the 520’s. I would love to add a ceramic one day but I love having a Daytona in my small collection. Congrats again and looking forward to pics!

Exactly. And I’d like to see anyone get even 5% off the 519. They are going for above retail (31-33k) all day long.

Patience. Await the next economic crash and the Chinese will be flogging their Daytonas for peanuts.
