5164a vs 5167 Owners decision making process-Did you consider Either or OR?

What was your decision making process for owning one of these? Did you want an Aquanaut and then decided between the two? Or was it based on functionality- GMT vs Only Date.

Retail (yes they are hard to get) there is a 15k difference between the two. The 5167 for 20k is an easier choice then 35k for the 5164a. You can get rid of the Aquanaut itch with just the 5167 or do you step it up and get the 5164a?

Did anyone here think about the two and choose one over the other?

I am really liking the 5164a. Its just so different, nothing like it out there.

Case Size? How do they wear? 40mm vs 40.8mm. 40.8mm is not a small watch by any means...does it wear big?

Haha that picture looks familiar! (Shortly after I picked up the 5164)

5167 was my first PP. Price was a huge factor. I found it hard to justify the additional cash for the 5164. Then 67 prices started creeping up and the cash I had to add on top to get the 64 made it an easier proposition.

To me, the 5164 just felt better proportioned overall. More symmetrical, interesting complication. It does wear slightly bigger, but it was just perfect even for my small wrists.

I’m a recent 5167 purchaser. I think my decision came down to the clean look of the 67 versus the more busy 64. I’m not sure price was a major deciding factor although I do find 15k for an added GMT function to be a little much. I don’t think I could ever justify owning both at the same time but I wouldn’t put it past myself to sometime own a 64.

You need to wear them both to really appreciate the difference. Was a big 5167 fan and then after trying the 5164a I am converted.

Only had 5167’s (4 don’t ask). 5164 on my short list. But if only one 5167 wins for me every time.

The classic Aquanaut style (three-hand plus date) is one of my all time favorite watches and aside from my wife, children and dog, it is perhaps the only thing I'd run back into a burning building for.

Not a big fan of the more complicated models in the collection and prefer those features housed in PM and leather.

And, while I'm not a fan of this particular model either, it's worth pointing out that for the price of a 64 you can theoretically have the 67 and a SkyDweller (if you're able to buy at retail).

You already can find the answer. 5167 vs 5164 have been discussed a lot here on TRF. You can google it and see that before people here voted 67 more than 64. But as time goes by, 64 gets more vote. Im impressed how 64 can slowly become more favorable.

No brainer. Couldn’t justify so much more money for the gmt function. I’m very pleased paying almost half the price of the 64 for the 67.

Totally agreed with this as I changed my 5164 to 5167 because I want the cleaner and slimmer case of 5167. Furthermore I find the date display window on 5167 is easier to read than the date pointer on 5164.

For me the cleaner date and time only 5167 is the better choice in longer term

The 64 might just be my favorite watch - along with the most useful complication (for me at least— we travel a lot). The travel time is on point. It wears great — better than the 67 to me.

They are two totally different watches, PP makes the best travel functions out there and makes the 64 an outstanding watch.
It is well balanced and comfortable especially when you can get a great fit with the tropical.
I never considered the 67 as there are many many great 3 handlers out there.
It wears perfectly on many wrist sizes , in fact, the 64 is so light you barely notice its there.
Good luck on your decision!

I love my 5164A. Despite the 40.8 mm, it wears smaller than a maxi case Rolex due to the 46 mm lug to lug vs 48 mm lug to lug (BLNR) and a 2mm lower height. Like previous posters mentioned, it's so light you'll forget you're even wearing a watch.
If you have no use for a travel time complication, might as well go with the 5167. The date indicator register at 6 looks on the 5164 is cool but is a little hard to read sometimes. If date is the only complication you want, another point for the 5167.
Overall, the 5167 has a lot more negative space (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, personal preference) but the 5164 with all of its positive space looks a little more balanced (and somewhat cluttered).

Would prefer the 67 plus a GMT master 1675 or 16710 for travel use.

I was given the option with both in hand and I chose the 5167. The travel time is an incredibly well done complication and I went into the transaction expecting to leave with the 5164. It truly comes down to your personal perception. I realise now being a 5711>5712 type. I like the simpler dial layouts.

I had the 5167 first as it was my entry into Patek coming from Rolex. I couldn’t fathom paying the extra for the travel time.

I sold my 5167 a few years later (mistake) and always missed it. I came across a 5164 and knew I had to have it. I’ve been enjoying it for about a year and a half now and it’s easily my favorite watch I’ve owned.

I really like both but push to shove I much prefer the 5164 for it’s supremely balanced dial, added complication and slightly more substantial case.

I've always loved the 5164, never been a huge fan of the 67, similar to the 5711a it is just a bit too plain for me, esp given the high retail before the hype which was why I never bought either. Price of the 64 was also a problem before given it just had the extra GMT function, esp compared to the Rolex delta, but now that is not an issue.

Never considered the 67. Bought the 64 and it is easily my favorite Patek sports watch for wearing everyday. It has a great look and it feels so comfortable on the wrist.

both are incredible.

5167 for me but I am a fan of minimalism and clean looks. you can wear this one with a suit.

One of the things that I love about the aquanaut is how it flies under the radar and is such a stealth watch. Both achieve this but I think the 5167 is more subtle. It is , as others have pointed out, also almost half the price.

Either way if you can get either at MSRP you'll be happy :)

The 5167 has such a clean and classic dial. Get the 5167 if you don't need the dual time function and use the money saved toward a 5711 or 5712.

Had the 5164 but looking to add the 5167r. 5164 and 5167 works well for smaller wrists. I don’t need the travel time function so I prefer the simplicity of the 5167.

This.

I’ll add that the slightly more substantial case gives it that extra oomph. Love the 64.

I flipped flopped over both before pulling the trigger. I initially liked the 67 more than the 64, but that was before seeing either in person.

Over the course of about 9 months and once I handled the 64, I had to have it. It’s the perfect watch and essentially has made me a one watch guy.

Which is unfortunate because I have a bunch of watches just collecting dust.

Do you use the date function routinely?

If so get the 5167a. It's clean and classic and the beautiful dial has more unbroken space. It has superior lume too.

Do you travel routinely? Get the 5164a. If fitted properly you'll never push the buttons accidentally and it has most of the dial effect that makes the aquanauts.

I changed from one to the other and back again before realising I had to have both due to constant lust for the other!

Are you actually going to travel with your $40K Patek Travel Time or will this just be a cool complication that you play with at home? I'm in the camp of buying the 5167 and getting a Rolex GMT for the rigors of travel, especially if you're one of those who cannot stomach a scratch on the bezel of your watch.

On a practical note seems to be more 5164 available at ad compared to 5167. I certainly found that to be the case. For me, 5164 was my preferred path but I always had a soft spot for the gmt functionality. My friends have 5167s and they’re certainly more svelte and streamlined but I have other pieces that show off simplicity and comfort better (to me). Can’t go wrong w either.
