No luxury watch is anywhere near common. That's why most people only know Rolex, Omega and Breitling. Recent Patek and AP thanks to hip-hop music.

Rolex is common!

I don’t think so! It’s the most notorious luxury watch brand! YES

I rarely see any Rolexes on people. Actually, more on women than men. They wear a lot the ladies DJ models in 26mm. Nothing looks better than the President in yellow gold 26mm on a woman. Its just sized so right the bracelet is just the right length on most woman to really showcase the watch and the drape of the bracelet.

Common is not the right adjective, desirable is more fitting. It's a very desired watch and I've caught the bug really really bad...lol

I love it for what it is. If I'm looking for something truly "special" (as in there are few others like it and even fewer who recognize it) then I still feel it's "too common." However, it's difficult to beat when it comes to combining durability with history, given Rolex's immeasurable contributions to watchmaking innovation. While mastering ultra-difficult complications is the territory of PP, AP, VC, etc, Rolex has been developing innovations for the "common" mechanical watch for decades, many of which are now taken for granted. In that regard, it doesn't matter how many of them are out there; Rolex as a company is anything but common.

I did. Intentionally steered towards Omega before realizing the crown is king

When I think all the time I wasted on other watches in the early part of my collecting career...

When I was younger I liked watches and appreciated their mechanical ingenuity but not enough to spend big money. Timex and Bulova were my closest approaches to haute horlogerie ; when I managed to come up with silly-money to dispose of I generally went for motorcycles or guitars. But I liked Rolexes... esp. the blue dialed DateJusts which at least got my attention when I was young. I knew they were fine watches.

Now, decades later and relatively late (in my 60s), my interest in watches has exploded; I finally appreciate Rolex enough to have taken the plunge. So... latecomer here.

I can appreciate Rolex for what it is. IMO it's the most recognized and attainable luxury watch. Because of this they are very common and I see them daily. Being Rolex owners and WIS we tend to notice them more then the average person on the street.

Absolutely with you on this one. Perhaps not "common," but old, stingy, an ostentatious? Yes. I equated Rolex to the Corvette, where purchasing one signals that the owner has a bit of money, but absolutely nothing to say. But then I ended up trying on a BLNR an AD showed me while on a trip to New York, and here we are....

Hodinkee actually had a nice quip as it relates to the Rolex appreciation curve. Many start out thinking it's the best watch, only to quickly learn it is not followed by eschewing the brand for too long a time period and eventually coming around to appreciate it once again.

The fever is getting less and less for me because of all the daily and repeatedly asked stupid questions about what's the best investment and is it safe questions of the new social media crowd who is joining the forums the last few years.

I see more in certain places.

Hong Kong and parts of Miami looks like a Rolex convention.

I had other objections to Rolex before coming around, but being too common wasn’t one of them.

Rolex owners either have absolutely nothing to say, or know 4, 5, or 6-digit serial numbers by heart.

I also started my fascination of mechanical watches from Tissot Visodate. From there I flipped watches in my collection, including Omega SeamasterPro james bond,
until now I find my true one-watch I need, which is the Explorer 114270 36mm.
I believe that I am a one-watch guy as I can only withstand one watch to wear all the time, if i want another watch, I flipped my current one. And I must say Rolex fills the need very well

Lol, a blend of Hodinkee's appreciation curve and the meme that Kliminator posted is what got me here...especially the GMT-Master II part and Inside Rolex articles...those really put me over the top.

You know whats funny I never really see Rolex's out in the wild. I was out at lunch today and saw 2 ppl wearing Daytona's.

I dont usually look out but I saw a guy starting at my wrist for an unusually long time so I looked back and he was wearing a Daytona. Another guy also a Daytona waiting in line for the restaurant I was going to.

I actually paused for a moment and thought wtf is going on here. LOL
