Any of you worry about people trying to rip you off when they see your watch?

I'm sure in some places it'd be stupid to think they wouldn't try, but I mean in places that you wouldn't expect.

I had to go to the dentist recently for an infected, impacted wisdom tooth. I was wearing my LVc, although I'm not sure if she actually noticed.

The dentist said I'd have to see an oral surgeon as she couldn't do anything for me, but then she tried very hard to up sell me on invisalign, veneers, and having fillings "re-done."

I wondered if she was laying it on extra thick b/c of the bling or if it was just standard practice at that particular practice. Suffice it to say, I will not be back.

You know I think that is just standard procedure. I have had my dentist say the same thing. Its like "would you like to upgrade your Sams Club Card today"?

They are in the business because they enjoy what they do and they wish to earn money as we all do. They are skilled professionals. Maybe your Rolex did make a difference but it would be foolish for a dentist to not make the pitch and lose out on additional money. If I had the extra cash I would certainly take my dentist up on veneers.

I doubt it was the watch. I've only ever seen this at car dealerships or ADs.

Every business does that. Did you know almost all credit card companies have a software system that will specifically pick out a product to try to sell you when you call in with a question?

I wouldn't think so, earlier today I filled my car's gas tank and bought some bread while I was there, the cashier didn't charge me more for it...

In all seriousness, I've never experienced such a thing.

That's kind of disappointing. I feel like as a medical professional, seeing that I was in pain and needed a surgical procedure done ASAP (her words), it was kind of unprofessional to keep me there for an extra length of time poking and prodding in my mouth to tell me what cosmetic changes I should make (that I did not inquire about).

I realize I didn't say that in the original post, but that's what she did and what made me pretty unhappy.

Interestingly, I took my car to an Audi dealer in the city for routine maintenance while wearing my Daytona and sweats. They gave me the once over and apparently disapproved...

Although to be fair, I was using pre-paid AudiCare and not in the sales area.

Get a grip.

It's unlikely that anybody there noticed any "bling" and probably couldn't tell you what kind of watch you had on if you asked..

Maybe she ran your credit report while you were waiting.

What really happened is she couldn't help you. You were a lost customer. The fee would go into someone else's pocket... for your tooth. Rather than getting nothing, she tried to get something. It wasn't the watch, but rather a good business tactic.

I agree that it was a paranoid thought. I guess I was just so disappointed in what I considered unprofessional behavior that I was looking for other reasons.

To everyone who says it's standard practice to do the up sell, I've polled many of my friends and they all say that their dentist only talk to them about veneers or cosmetic procedures when they inquire about it first.

Not when a patient is there for an emergency appointment with an infected tooth needing a surgical procedure.

When I go into Jewelry stores/AD's my left wrist feels like a hot blondes cleavage. Every single eye makes a quick glance for the wrist then "Hello Sir how can I help you."

I can't say my Deepsea made negotiations more difficult on my Jeep but I'm sure my salesman noticed and was probably a little annoyed when I kept haggling down a couple hundred here and there.

It's about margins. And they're getting thinner everyday. So more sell-thru is needed. You'll find this at McDonalds. Want fries with that?

I certainly see the point in this, but they had my information and could've followed up with me after I had an appointment with my oral surgeon.

It's about knowing the situation. Call me after my appointment with the oral surgeon you referred me to. Pretend you give a crap about my well being, and then do the up sell.

It's really hard to find people these days who actually care about you. I run into this all the time. I've learned to ignore it... But... I always make sure to go out of my way to be a good person.

Fair enough, though I did say pretend to care... This makes me wonder though, since dentists aren't real doctors, do they have to take the hippocratic oath? First do no harm...

I had a salesman in a western wear store say "Shouldn't be a problem for a guy wearing a gold Rolex" when I balked at the price of a pair of fancy boots. Joke was on him, though. I was wearing a 1970s model Lucien Piccard (Rolex President look-alike).

I had a sales guy at a store when trying on a pair of shoes say to me "It's not like you're taking out a mortgage."
