How do you feel about selling your first Rolex?

A coworker of mine suggested that I sell my Explorer to fund the new Sub I'd like to get. I'm more of the mindset to keep my current one and save for a new watch, but I'm curious how people on here feel about that.

Do you regret selling your first?

Regret selling mine. Ended up buying the same model down the road just to say I had my “first Rolex” in the collection. But obviously not the same

I don't think I'd ever sell mine, but then again I sold my first "trophy watch" which was a Tag Aqua racer to help fund my second Rolex.

I've come close. Everytime I don't sell it... I am thankful.

I still have mine and I’m glad I do. Its currently at RSC Toronto getting a service, new dial and bracelet. I wouldn’t sell your Explorer. You’ll regret it.

I sold my first which was a Datejust. No regrets at all as my tastes have changed, and I would never wear that watch today.

I’ve waffled on selling mine - my 14060m. I love the watch, but I wear my Sea-Dwellers and Explorer more, so it tends to sit in the watch box and seems superfluous at this point. Still on the fence, as I suspect I might regret it. Other days, I think it might be better to send it to a new home where it would be appreciated. Mixed bag, but I haven’t done it yet.

I've never regretted selling a Rolex - it's preferable to flip than to deal with their service centre!

If you don't like it anymore, why not? Is it an heirloom or a special gift from someone? Otherwise, it's just a watch.

That said, I'd always recommend stretching your budget if possible, to own both watches simultaneously, and then decide which one is the keeper.

Totally regret selling mine. It was a sub date I bought new from an AD back around 2004. Wish I still had it!

I’m in this exact position right now. Not looking to sell for any reason other than since I got my BLNR in December I’ve worn my Explorer twice and each time all I wanted to do was put the BLNR back on. Seems a shame to leave it sat there not getting any wrist time but gonna give it a few months before I decide. Although it’s my first Rolex it’s not my first nice watch and I’ve sold everything I’ve bought up until now with little to no regrets.

I started in high end watches about 17 years ago with a Breitling colt and loved it. Was finally able to find a Rolex DJ that was in my price range (20yrs old) that was pretty basic but had the oyster bracelet that I like vs. the jubilee. Wore it for several years and replaced the silver dial with a nice off white jubilee dial with Arabic markers and I loved it. Had it for many more years but sold it and made some cash on it. I regret it every day. I finally just bought a polar 216750 and will keep it forever. Most likely pass it on to my son when he’s ready for it. If you have an attachment to it being your first. Keep it.

Question for those saying they regret - is it anything to do with the watch going up a lot in value in the last couple of years and you wish you’d kept hold of it as would be worth more now? I feel a little like that with most of the watches I sold - seems I buy at the right time but sell at the wrong time :(

Sold mine (16760 GMT Fat Lady with no date on the dial) which was a birth year purchased by my parents upon my birth. Sold it to fund a few other items after university. Really regret letting it go now.

would never sell mine DJII, brought it for personal reasons, well wanted a "nice watch" looked at the omega speed master "moon watch" but knew deep down I'd regret not getting a rolex.........the moon watch is still lurking on my mind!!!
So save for your next piece is my thoughts.

Oh and getting the DJII, turned into a very slippery slope..as well as being a member on here!!!

Rolex submariner 16610. I bought it in 2005 when I was an expat, I always loved the watch. Funny thing, I sold it to get a DSSD, got exactly what I paid for it. I liked the DSSD but could not get over the loss of my 16610. I hounded the buyer for months until they agreed to sell it back! I will never get rid of it and it will be my Son's watch one day.

Then do that. No matter what anyone else says on here, it's not going to make it any less painful if you end up flipping your Explorer and then having to go back and get it.

I don't really regret selling my first Rolex. It was a 36mm DJ and I never wore it after I got a SubC

It depends. I have a keeper collection and then I have a flipping collection. Each are small but I tend to keep the one(s) that I love the most and can live with until I kick the bucket, and then there are others that wear off once on the wrist and I want to try something new so I flip them. If you only have one you love, I would save up for a second or third and consider one of those as flipping opportunities to keep trying on new stuff.

I have my first and still wear it. I saved for my second and don't plan to let that go either. I am currently saving for my third. I plan to pass then along to my kids at some point, so plan is to hang on to them.

I could never. It was a gift from my parents, and what really got me into watches.
