Blue dial 15300

The standard blue dial for the RO 15300 have a distinctively more matte blue color than the 15202/15400/15500. However, I have seen sunburst versions for both the blue and white (silver) 15300 dial as well.

My theory is that either the last versions of the 15300 from 2011 came with the metallic dials because AP shifted to in-house manufacturing of the dials, and thereby using the same materials as for the preceding 15400 dials.

Alternatively the metallic dials that are now on the market are replacement parts produced by AP in recent years, and that they are not using the matte material anymore.

Does anyone know anything about this? I’m also wondering if you would, given the choice, have preferred to have the standard matte dial or the sunburst dial on your 15300?

Pictures below for reference.

I personally prefer the look of the slightly matte blue dials of the 15300 as opposed to the bright sunburst on the newer references..

A good friend has recently purchased a 15202 and I was surprised at how "wet" the dial appeared in person.

I have an H serial 15300ST but it seems to have the darker blue dial. The lighter blue dial shade reminds me very much of my 15450ST.

I'm not sure if the difference is "matte" vs. "sunburst" or just the fact that the other shade of blue is darker and therefore reflects less light? They both seem to be non-matte in bright sunlight. I've attached pics of both in sunlight.

Matte color looks too flat, I preferred the new sunburst version, it gives more depth.

Especially white/silver looks a lot better for the new version.

Matte / darker blue dial w/o much sunburst to keep the attention on the case and bracelet design which is what the Royal Oak is all about IMO.

Yeah, the flat-looking white dials don't do much for me, but I definitely like the shimmery silver/white dials.

Yes I’ve noticed this difference too. I wonder when they changed to the more metallic dial shade does anyone know?

I recently saw a 15300 for the first time. I was pretty excited at the opportunity of finally buying a 39mm RO but was not to impressed with the matte dial. I am accustomed to the 15500 and 26331 dial which look much more impresisve.

I think around 2010 >

I have F serial so circa 2008 with earlier dial which I like that said I also think the later more glossy / sunburst suits the watch very well too..

seems to be a big price surge currently as many are now appreciating its the closest thing to a 15202 Jumbo in dimension but obviously with a seconds hand which i personally prefer as it brings the dial to life...

BUMP on this thread.

I am looking out desperately for a blue 15300 or 15450/15550.

However, having never seen a 15300 in person (I will have to buy sight unseen here in Australia), I am wondering how it is possible to ensure a Sunburst dial (and to ensure legitimacy).

I think I prefer the 39 in size (have tried a 15202 on my small but flat wrist); but the 15450 sunburst looks great.

Sunburst dials are service dials. Most of the unserviced ones I had seen were all matte dials.
