Stealth but correcting people?

Wearing my Smurf and a lot of people commenting on it like it’s a reg SS sub. I feel compelled to be like no no, it’s different Adam Levine - you see the blue face only came in WG. But then that kinda defeats the purpose of it being “under the radar”. Been finding it amusing.

That means the “under the radar” is working but I see why it is a bit irritating being a watch enthusiasts. I get that way with very specific high end car models.

Just buy a YG sub and that problem goes away.

I am in western pa . A few years ago, I had a nice dinan stage 3 550 and some guy at a gas station with a 530 walks over and says “your car looks similar to mine but what’s the difference?” “Like 275 horsepower”. He just said wow and walked back to his car. It made me laugh .

I feel your pain man, as my TT Sea-Dweller gets mistaken for a plebian Sub all the dang time!

It does reveal the true enthusiasts who get it right though.

You could get a hat made that says “My White GOLD ROLEX Watch Cost $42,000”

Then, just wear it everywhere you go.

It’s not the $ part tho. It’s the watch collector in me who wants my piece to be correctly discussed.

Why would you want to correct anyone, who assumes it’s SS? The only reason would be to impress them. As someone else mentioned, then get a yellow gold Sub. I choose watches that impress me. I don’t care what anyone else thinks., and truth be told, no one ever notices my watch, except my close friends, and family, who know I’m a collector.

Hi Kat, good question. I guess it's because the watch enthusiast in me would want my piece to be correctly identified and discussed (in the right setting anyway). After experimenting for years I arrived at the best piece for me. It's not about wanting to show off $ to impress. I'm aware of other options (like YG) that do that better. I didn't pick them. Still wouldn't.

Buy a Patek. It will narrow the field and up the game for interesting watch discussion. Or just walk around concerned that some nobody will confuse your precious metal timepiece for a plebian steel model. Bizarre.

Consider that perhaps your emotion on the matter is revealing something about why you buy Rolex.

No judgment here, but something to consider.

Well, let's start from a place of bizarre. Because that is what motivated me to post this experience in the first place, i.e. me noticing the bizarre conflict I was having and finding it amusing. So I'm with you there.

But what is the bizarre contradiction that it occurring? It's me valuing the stealthy aspect of a piece in choosing to pick it (i.e. me going out of my way to have something ostensibly LESS wealthy and LESS showy), but then taking some issue (from a collector's point of view) in having that piece misidentified.

So it's basically a story of two preferences colliding, i.e. a desire to be under the radar but at the same time a desire to be 'understood' as a snowflake watch collector.

I am genuinely curious.

So what are these people saying where it compels you to think they are "commenting on it like it’s a reg SS sub."?

People are just being polite and I assume don’t want a lesson in the Rolex catalogue. Anyone with half an interest in watches knows roughly what a sub looks like and to them, it’s just a Sub. To nearly everyone else, it’s just a watch.

Sounds like, despite what you’ve said are annoyed that people don’t know you’re rocking a gold piece.

As others have stated, you’d have been better off with a yellow gold Sub, or just get over the hang up you have about yours and how others see it.

Good question.

Someone said nice sub, you know you get those for 9K and then it is worth 20K on the secondary market.

Now, there was so much incorrect information in the statement that I thought my head was going to explode - that mine is still available from an AD, that it's not the SS version ostensibly being described, that even if it was that SS version, the numbers are wrong in the current market, etc.

So then I got into a conversation with the guy about watches for the next 20 min or so, and it was fun. Really nice guy. He also mentioned that he knows someone with a 'green on green' kermit. Also had to correct that one.

Then my wife and I were joking about how I picked the smurf to be under the radar but I felt compelled to correct misinformation around it. So I figured I'd post it here as an amusing experience. Reminded me of what Ben Clymer did NOT choose to do with Adam Levine.

Unfortunately this has turned into me being accused of being someone who only cares about showing wealth etc. But what can I do, the nature of public forums I guess.

I don't know how many times I have to say it, but it really is not about gold vs not gold. I'd do the same thing if someone thought I had a regular oris aquis instead of the holstein limited edition. I'll concede it is still about impressing I guess, or making sure that my stylistic choices to the world are correctly perceived. But it really isn't about trying to show wealth. My choice would make no sense for that.

The only people who give a flying eff, about the details of the watch you are wearing, are right here! It’s why we all joined. We can share all the details of each new acquisition, with people who get us, and our passion for nice mechanical timepieces. It sounds like your own obsession, and it IS an obsession, is bordering on unhealthy. Who cares what strangers think?! We know it’s white gold, and are suitably impressed.

The process of correcting someone completely takes away from the cool factor of stealth.

I recommend you wear and enjoy. Someday you will run into someone (like me) who loves it wants to have a great conversation.

I find this post interesting. Thank you OP for sharing your thoughts.

I also have a WG Sub and actually prefer that people mistake it for a SS. I don't like to be identified as having a gold piece, and prefer the stealth that WG offers.

That said, I can understand how you might get frustrated at having your piece mis-identified.

Curious, if that is the case, why you didn't go for a YG piece? Is it simply that you prefer the aesthetic of WG?
