New Member -ticking noise question

I just purchased my first Rolex, a Oyster Perpetual 39 with the blue dial. I know this may be a dumb question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway.

When I hold my watch up to my ear I hear a very quick ticking noise? Is this normal? I've seen different things online saying that only fake Rolex's make a sound. Please advise?

if you stop wearing it...set it stationary on a table for a couple of days, it should stop making that noise. Try it and let us know if that helps.

You are right, it is a dumb question. All mechanical watches, that I am aware of, tick. Granted, some louder than others.

8 ticks a second is normal. It should never miss a beat.

It depends on which movement you have. Many such as the Sub, SD, and GMT have a 48 hour reserve. Some are longer reserve times. Welcome to the forum!

If you don't wear it at least every other day, I would get a winder.

Welcome to TRF, and congratulations on your first Rolex. There's no such thing as a dumb question, particularly from a new member.

You'll find that some people here can be very funny

Place that gorgeous OP next to your ear at night and let that tickita tickita tickita sound lull you off to sleep, totally normal and a warm TRF welcome.

Wait for an explosion...If it just stops ticking at around the 48hr mark, you've got yourself a watch.

...and pics or it didn't happen! Welcome to TRF

If you listen exactly one minute and you count the tick tock's.
Should he make 480 tick tock's, otherwise it is fake (or old model).

When you hear 60 very loud (steel on steel) tick tock's it's a Oysterquartz (or a swatch).

When you hear BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ it's a tuning fork movement.

When you hear absolut nothing ! It's a Seiko Spring Drive (The Quiet Revolution).

Sometimes you can hear the balans spiraal resound/sing (no joke).
It must be very very quiet.

Your watch movement (inside your watch) = Rolex Caliber 3132

Power Reserve = Approximately 48 hours
With beautiful paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring.

It tick tock's 28.800 per hour 4 Hz.

There are no stupid questions !

Welcome !
Congratulations with your Oyster !

On top of the sound of the escapement clicking 8 times per second, I hear a faint hum when I listen to my Rolex watches. I was wondering how this resonances occurs, or am I just hearing awesomeness ooze from my watches?

it's the awesomeness, but, like you I wonder why the hum tends to come and go in definite cycles.

Normal. If you think that's loud you should hear my Hamilton Field auto... sounds like it needs to be disarmed.

A ticking sound? Clearly a fake! A Rolex 39 purrs. Anything over a 40 is a wrong. Or so I've read on this forum.

I love the sounds from my 16570
It's almost a hum infused with the obvious tic . resonates up through the pillow . Love it
