Which would you buy - 16700 or 16710?

I've always wanted a 1675 matte but I missed my chance in 2010 buying one for $3800(!) and have been beating myself up ever since. I also remember selling my 5513 for $2900. Obviously, since then vintage Rolex prices have become absolutely irrational.

Since vintage Rolex has skyrocketed, I can no longer afford a 1675 but I can afford a 16700 or 16710 at around $6,500.

I'm kind of leaning towards the 16700 because the case profile, hand-stack, and the name GMT - Master is more in-line with what I want which is a 1675.

But there is certainly a good argument for the 16710 since it has the newer, more complicated movement (and three time-zones, which I'll never use).

I wonder if the 16700 will one day increase in value over the 16710 and I also wonder if the 16700 is something the average local watchmaker could service more easily than the 16710.

But I'm more interested in what you guys think is the best one to get.

I'm biased because I have a 16700, but I prefer it over the 16710 because it has more of a connection to the original DNA of the GMT Master, in my mind, anyway.

The 16700 is the last "GMT Master" reference (not a "GMT Master II," like the 16710), and I actually prefer the regular quick-set date feature on the movement. You don't need to spin the hour hand around repeatedly to advance the date, like on the 16710. The 16700 is also slimmer, so it sits flatter on the wrist, which I love.

And my understanding is the 16700 only ever came from the factory with a Pepsi or black insert, not Coke, which is another nod to the older GMT Masters. As for value, who knows. I don't worry about that too much. Either way, both are classic Rolexes that hold their value very well as long as they're in good shape. Good luck in your search!

Thanks. Your watch looks great. Actually I hadn't thought about that with the 16710. I think that would drive me crazy not having a quickset date. You may have just sold me on it. Unfortunately none of the 16700 I'm looking at have a jubilee so if you happen to know which jubilee model # is correct for the 16700 I'd appreciate it. Also I notice all of these watch dealers seem to put aftermarket inserts on their watches to make them look fresh, and they all look polished.

How about a 16750. You should be able to just about find a decent one for your budget with a matte dial...

Totally agree. You can still find a 16700 in almost new condition, the 16750's are getting a little harder to come by. Best of luck in your search

They are both great watches and you won't go wrong with either model. The only other comment I would like to add is that there were substantially more GMT II 16710s sold than 16700s.

My issue right now is,a lot of the 16700s I see for sale have questionable parts. Aftermarket inserts, hands, crystals, and I think even the bracelets or at least the clasps look fake. These sellers are either purposely deceiving people or they are not informed enough to realize it. But the 16710s I see for sale look pretty legit. It may force me to get a 16710.

The issue of replacement/after-market parts can apply to any older Rolex really, and there are plenty of 16710s that have the same issues if you're not careful. It all comes down to where you're looking. Ebay and Chrono24 are minefields. I'd stick to a couple of key sellers mentioned often on this forum or individuals who list in the "For Sale" section here.

The jubilee model # is the 62510 according to the great resource that is www.gmtmasterhistory.com

I plumped for the 16700 for the reasons others have highlighted:
- preference for quick set date over 3 time zones
- slightly fewer in number / rarer
- last of the gmt masters
- slightly slimmer case profile

Got mine a few weeks ago and love it even more than I expected

Must agree with the above. My 16700 GMT (U serial) probably gets most wrist time right now...and this is coming from a Sub/SD guy! It's on a nicely aged or 'lived in' Oyster bracelet with a Sub clasp and dive extension, and must say that I love it!

I have also had a 16710 and really liked it too though I flipped it a few years back, something I regret from time to time. I will maybe grab one again someday if the opportunity comes my way.

Both the 16700 and the 16710 are super watches, and I would strongly recommend them to anyone. The quickset date on the 16700 is definitely very convenient - that said, the independent hand on the 16710 is also quite useful in fast forwarding the date. Both wear very nicely on the wrist though to be honest, I had not noticed that the 16710 case was deeper?

I have been fortunate in picking up the 1675 and 16750 too through the years and again would recommend both. If I had to recommend one to go for from scratch though, I think it would be the 16700....last of the GMTs!

I would recommend the 16700 too. Mines is transitional Swiis only dial with luminova. Like others I like it a lots due the reasons mentioned.
