I remember a similar poll 4-5 years ago and the 5711 won with almost 70% of the votes. 5 years later... almost a dead-heat.
Wonder if the fact that both of these watches are very hard to get now as oppossed to just the 5711 (as was the case five years ago) is a factor. We all want what we can't have after all... |

I think 5711 if it's my only watch. 5712 if I've got a couple already.
I've only seen the 5711 in person. |

I actually think the opposite. 5712 is a great "ONLY" watch. 5711 n edsowner to have other fine timepieces for variety because 5711 is so plain. Hard to imaging 5711 as only watch.

But also happily have and wear the 5711A as my only watch  In fact that is what I am hoping to do, and mark a special life event.

Having had 5711 White Dial, I am a little intrigued to opt for 5712 Blue Dial as I kinda like the power reserve & moon-phase functions it offers.

I think the 5711 white dial and 5712/1a would be a great pair..

The Nautilus is a sports watch. The 5712 has a complicated dress watch movement that belongs in a dress watch. This movement appeared in the 5015 with a hunters case. Far more appropriate there. The simpler the better for a sports watch. Plus the hand pusher for the moon knocks the pressure proof down to what 70m from 120m for 5711.

If only one then 5711, it's symmetrical and pretty much perfect.

Perhaps that is why the decision is sooo difficult!

Hope this helps...
5711 is a perfect watch. It can not be improved upon in any way. However, it is still a 3 hand watch with a date window that my wife thinks looks like a "Citizen watch." 5712 is not a perfect watch. There are elements that one could wish were different when scrutinizing it. However, it is undeniably beautiful and looks like a fine timepiece. (It also looks much better in person than it does in photos.) It is truly a one of a kind watch. People who have no idea what Patek Philippe is have commented to me how much they love my 5712. It is a watch you can interact with insofar as it looks different every day as the analog date hand and moon phase are changing daily, and the power reserve hand is changing hourly. I find myself constantly staring at my 5712. With a 5711, you admire it when you put it on and when you check the time, but you do not stare at it. As for the movements, the 240 movement is also a very rare and special movement whereas the 324 movement looks like many automatic movements (albeit a very high-end version). To me, it really comes down to this: Do you want the perfect sports watch and be admired by half of the Patek worshiping world while saving $7,500 in the process (if purchased new from AD)? Then go for the 5711. However, if you want a watch that is truly unique and spectacular, more likely to draw a compliment from the general public (yet still under the radar), and much more interesting to look at; go for the 5712. |

My view is that eventually you will get both because they are very different watches in terms of function. If I have to choose one I think I shall go for the 5712 because apart from the brand and design, 5711 is a very basic watch that one can replaced by other brands. My two cents

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...65#post7544765 I thought all these comparison threads were an attempt to gauge if he had made the correct decision in getting the 5712 over the 5711 - no wrong outcome either way as far as I can see. |

I agree. I think the main reason the 5711 is currently the watch to have is that it's hard to acquire. It's PP's Daytona C (another mildly underwhelming watch IMO). The 5712 is far more interesting, both horologically and to look at.

Let me preface by saying that the 5712 is a really cool watch with the moonphase, useful Power reserve complication, and the micro-rotor 240 PS movement. I don't think one or the other really matters, they are both Patek at its best..
But personally, I would choose the 5711. After seeing it in the flesh I really fell in love with it. So thin and beautiful. The only downside is that it is exorbitantly expensive for what it is: a steel cased center seconds watch with a haute horology movement. Here's one of a fellow collector who graciously let me try it out: I believe the original design of the Nautilus was to transmit the feeling of looking out of a porthole into the ocean, and this is why the uninterrupted lines of the 5711/1A-010 wins out for me. |
