please help, this is bothering me.....

Hi....everyone. its a pleasure finally being a member of this board. read alot, but never signed up til now.

I purchased a explorer 2 black dial, in Hong Kong at a Chow Tai Fook.
The thing is that i noticed the date magnification on my explorer 2 is smaller than the magification on my day date. It is also smaller when compared to my freind's yachmaster.

Now there is no way my ex.2 could be a fake since i bought it from a famous retail dealer, right ????

Please .......i need to know. I called a watchmaker and he offered to open up the case for 60 bucks.

Go to the Rolex Service Center next time when you are in HK or NY, bring your Rolex card and the watch. The authenticity check is free indeed, although most likely it will be verbal but not any form of paper certificate.

Does CTF have any branches in Mongkok? Do they offer good discounts on Rolexes?

Seriously, post some pix or pay the $60 bucks. We can't answer what we can't see.

Mr Chow,

I am 101% certain that Chow Tai Fook will not sell you a fake. If it bothers you, get it checked nevertheless by authorised Rolex center in HK.

no, CTF is probably the biggest and well-known AD in Hongkong.

It's like asking, if Tourneau is selling fakes.

For all who never have been to there: Yes, you can buy fakes there. But fakes are sold in backlot rooms or at train stations in China. If you walk into a reasonable quality jewelers, you won't get any fakes.

But HK has something like 50-100 Ads and there is no way, that anyone of them would sell a fake - particularly not the biggest one of them who is CTF.

Mr Chow,

Not all Rolexes are equal in this case. The Explorer II has a slightly thicker caliber than the YM, but the thickness of the case, and caseback is the same (if I remember correctly), so to allow for room for the thicker caliber the distance from the date wheel to the crystal differs between the two models, and since they use the same glass there is a difference in magnification.

So (and I do not remember the exact figures) the distance from the date wheel to the underside of the lens might be 2.8 mm in one case and 2.4 in the other. This is the room needed to allow for the hand stack, and considering the fact that the ExII has four hands, and less room one have to say that the caliber sits very, very tight in the case, whilst there is more room in the YM.

And also a bit more magnification.

Enjoy your ExII!

Best,

A

The first rule of thumb on spotting a fake is the magnification. should be at least 205x, from factory its 2.5X.
