If there was a movement upgrade, I would be much more willing to pay a premium over the 116520 though, just my perspective and don't get me wrong the 116500 is a beautiful beautiful time piece
The movment will likely be around unchanged for a long time, it is perhaps the greatest feature of the Daytona 116520 or 116500, and of course the brilliant fit and comfort.

Excellent video showing the differences between the old and new Daytona above.

The bezel changes everything about this timepiece. Where I never wanted a Daytona I now can't live without it. Far more wrist presence and less bling, feels more vintage and connected, especially the black.
Great video by David and agree it really highlights the subdial differences between the two black dial variants.

TBH if you've got a good purchasing relationship with you AD I personally don't think the wait will be over 18 months

I just read in another thread that a Rolex dealer in Boca Raton has a Daytona Ceramic waitlist that is 350 people long.

I was AD waitlisted and after a year got fed up, decided to take immediate action. If you do the math, the delta between list price plus tax and going grey market with prices recently dropping is only $3,500 USD. In my case, that was the cost of a Datejust I rarely wore, maybe five times a year, decided it was well worth losing that watch to gain my grail.

24 hours later, I had this on my wrist. Check out the grey market pricing, there's no reason for anyone to be waitlisted anymore. $3,500 is real money, no doubt, but if you have a drawer full of watches you never wear you'll be surprised how easy it is to say goodbye to one or two to get a watch you really want.
In the UK (like the OP), the price difference between RRP and grey marker is much greater than $3500.

That's a shame. But flights from London to NY can be had for $350 and Manhattan is quite beautiful in May.

You could save about $4k with the 116520 right now, and it is really the same watch and isn't any more different than a WG polished bezel vs WG Ceramic. RG Ceramic has been around for years as well. I have a feeling most who drool over the 116500, but have no interest in the 116520, have not seen both in person side by side, because the difference is very marginal.
I think there is a difference in the two models. The new one is a bit more masculine then the 520 in my opinion.

You could have a nice used 116520 tomorrow for decent money. Are you sure you want a ceramic? I have a feeling that time will judge the 116520 very favourably, just like the 16610/14060 Sub vs the Sub C. The 116520 has the same movement as the 116500 and has the added bonus of already having a superb bracelet and clasp, unlike other older generation Rolexes.

I only have one example of the Rolex ceramic generation. After the initial infatuation I never wear it now.

I went to a few dealers and they all sort of hinted that I will have a chance if I buy other watches with them. I didn't want to play the game. So, I went grey as opposed to buying something I didn't want nor need just to build relationship in hopes of getting the one I actually want.

If you REALLY want it, pay the premium and buy from a grey dealer. Why wait 3 years to save a few bucks, if you can afford to buy one now?

The "buy a DD @list and get a DayC @list" idea doesn't really make sense to me. While I understand the reluctance to pay scalper's prices for a watch (over "face value"), the savings you can easily negotiate on a (PM) DD more than offset the premium saved on getting the Daytona at RRP.

What feeds this frenzy to pay premium dollars is an age old adage....."What I can have I don't want, and what I can't have I want".

I think the 116520 is a great watch and I almost pulled the trigger on one multiple times. I call the 116500 a mid model refresh...but what a refresh! Like it or not in the end a steel Daytona is a steel Daytona, they will always have lore and waitlists in certain areas. I could spend 12K at DavidSW(his words) for a complete 116520 or $12,400 for a new 116500...the math was simple. Is the 116500 worth more than $12400 not in my opinion but it is if you are willing to pay it. One just has to decide if they have more time than money or money than time.

Just got mine yesterday new from an AD. Don't give up and call ADs around your local area as some have already posted, eventually someone will have it.
