Who wants a Sub! You'd be a boring moron to want one!

The whole world of watches out there and you buy a Sub, do you not have your own thoughts, your own opinions? Have to be the same as everyone else! Scared tonne individual! All the beautiful boutique divers at half or more the price, why oh why would you buy a bloody Sub.

I went on a day out today for the sole purpose of buying my first 'nice' watch. I had a few options in mind, as a recent kind of convert to the merits of Rolex, perhaps a new Datejust 41, or a Milgauss in that beautiful blue or the 'real man's' Rolex dove watch the SDDS! then onto my first stop........ Blancpain.....

First watch I tried was the 43mm Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape on NATO, I tried on the brushed blue face and the black face, both of these were Ti models. This is in no way a review so briefly they were nice, can't really say more as that's all they were, perhaps a bit spartan in the dial, imo a really lovely size on the wrist, for note I am a lean 240lbs man with a flat 7 1/2 inch wrist. Personally this watch should be on NATO it just feels right. I got the feeling if I was in my mid 20's this is the watch I'd want, lovely display back, oddly completely covered by the NATO. The one thing I will say is for me the bezel was too thin and very ratchety, a bit too industrial on the turn.

Next was the watch I went to go and see. The true Fifty Fathoms, in the window this watch left me cold, I mean really cold. Out of the case wow it was a different matter completely. The size on me was perfect and as many say it wears far smaller than the 45mm figure. I can't say enough good things about this watch but at £10500 UK AD price can I justify it...... sailcloth strap, possible service issues and all my friends are like wtf is that!

So I wander over to Rolex, casually and see the Deepsea, I have to try it, the black and silver is a bit meh, a bit safe, then this monstrosity comes out, on the wrist it was fine in diameter, looked great and really filled my wrist, then bam I look to see the sheer depth of this thing! It's a beast, it has to be no doubt, it felt like the king of divers, big, heavy, manly and professional, I walked round in this watch for 10 mins, could barely get it of my wrist then I just had to accept as my first nice watch, it's just too deep, for the job intended it's epic but Day to day for me it was too heavy and too deep.

I loved the SDDS but it was just too deep for me Day to day, I can't even contemplate a bloody Sub! No way not me.........

I left wearing a brand new Sub Hulk and couldn't be happier!

Edit: I do have poor corresponding phone pics but don't know how to embed of my phone, if I learn I'll update.

I agree... nobody should have a pre-conceived idea when looking for the watch they want to wear.

When I bought any Sub or GMT that I own, what anybody else may have been wearing never crossed my mind..

You got what you like (and a damn fine looking model). That's all that matters. Get the Tapatalk app., makes uploading things much easier.

I agree but disagree with this, lol. I have over 300 watches in my collection and #250 something was the Rolex Hulk Sub. I somehow always go to the Hulk when searching for the WOTD and rarely go to my other divers. I found the fifty fathoms to be too much for my needs and the Aquaracer for example is just to "big and heavy" for my wrists; to each his own there. I am not only happy with the sub, I formed my own opinion of it after owning hundreds of watches and not by reading anything else. I actually hated the sub due to it's popularity but immediately "got over it" once I put one on

Happens to us all... I tried to avoid a sub by getting an IWC Aquatimer... I wore it exclusively for a couple years, but ultimately ended up getting a sub too. Now the IWC sees barely any wrist time.

Congrats on the LV, enjoy!

you had me at the first sentence. I bought my first Rolex about a month ago. Milgauss Z Blue. I bought it because I liked it more than the other models. Don't get me wrong there are some slick looking Rolex watches. It is true everyone and his dog has a sub. I do like the Hulk but it will be my last Rolex to buy.

Full circle....

Personally, I don't buy items because of their scarcity in the wild or because of their prominence in the wild.

Good thing you didn't get a boring old vanilla-man Sub...

I'm pretty impressed with your observations Sir. Likewise when friends and relatives asked me "What do you recommend for a Diver watch that is not a Rolex Sub Date?"This is Megan's 1st choice answer

Congrats on your new watch. For the record though, I don't think that buying a Sub means you don't have your own thoughts or tastes. The standard Sub is an excellent design, an excellent investment, and will likely hold up in resale better then most other watches.

I'm just a believer in respecting peoples choice. Congrats again on yours.

So you live in the Uk, walked into an AD and walked out with a hulk?

HOW? Do share because that's pretty impressive. I am depserately looking for a hulk :-)

Congrats on the new watch!

Where was this out of curiosity? DSSD and Hulk available today, in the Uk at the same AD.

Congrats though

Firstly thanks for all the comments and replies, didn't expect so many. HONDABBQ, the Blue Milgauss was my first Rolex love, it's the watch that made me know i need a Rolex in my life, congrats I certainly don't blame you for picking it up, I feel I'll just have to at some point. And yep Megan the Blancpain certainly was beautiful on the NATO, so much so I fact that the friend I went with today was totally enamoured by it and is now heavily considering the blue faced one the matching blue NATO.

This, apart from the last bit. I had a Hulk and hated it six months later FWIW. The Bathyscaphe is far better and rarer IMO.

Congrats on the Sub, you certainly got lucky picking one up in the UK

I used to have similar thoughts regarding the Sub. I never wanted one and couldn't see the fascination. Now I'm on my local AD's waiting list and seriously considering the purchase.

Tyler not the same AD for the DSSD and the Hulk, the DSSD was used a 2011 I believe in Watchfinder Canary Wharf and the Hulk was actually a friends preorder that came in and I was collecting for him, once I saw it, a bit of persuading that he didn't need another watch right now it was mine! Cost me lunch and a few drinks but I'm certainly smiling.

And SatansLittleHelper, I can easily see someone preferring the Bathyscape, as I say my friend absolutely loved it, certainly overlooked by too many people, for me the Star of the show was the 45mm Fifty Fathoms, my problem with the Bathyscape is I'd always pine for its big brother sadly.
