I simply cannot decide!
I know that this question is nearly as old as time itself, but I simply cannot decide between the Sub date and no date for my first Rolex.
I love the clean and symmetrical aesthetics of the no date, but the cyclops is useful as well as iconic. I'm going to law school if that helps at all, because maybe one is specifically best for a young lawyer? I almost wish Rolex didn't offer a choice in the matter because this is too difficult! |

Date. Get the no date later if you still want it.

A watch's main purpose is to tell time. Having a date is a bonus, but neither a requirement nor a deal breaker for some. Get what you like, regardless of its iconic status.
However, since this is your first, a no-date is probably the most romantic choice. The sub in its purest form - perfect for getting into your classes in time, and in style! If you absolutely need the date, check your phone. Good luck and post pics when you pull the trigger!! |

I have both...I would say if you wear it everyday and don't need to wind it much get the date. If it's part of a rotation and you'll be winding/setting it often, get the no date. I don't keep my watches on a winder and when I pick up my 114060 that hasn't been worn in a while it's nice to just set the time and not worry about the date. I know, we aren't talking a lot of saved time but that's my $.02

Both good choices, get the one that you like the best on your wrist. There is no "right" choice.

I have no date. If you are one of those who needs a date, such as managing your busy schedules, get a date. If you are going to wear it daily, you will be fine. If you are not going to be wearing your Rolex daily, get a no date - easier to reset the time.

I bought the Sub Date (16610) as my first, but just couldn't get comfortable with it and soon realised that it was the no date (14060M) that I really wanted. Symmetry, hollow end links, better car and dial proportions (dial is ever so slightly smaller, so the indices and hands look a fraction bigger, insert slightly different proportions, etc - it's only very subtle, but it's there).
Anyway, sold the date and bought the no date and have never regretted it for a second. My advice is to look at as many pictures of each as you can until you know which you prefer. Of course, if you're looking at the ceramic bezel models, the difference, as I understand it, is JUST the date/cyclops. The case, dial, bezel, etc are all identical (unlike the pre-ceramic versions). |

No date and advance the bezel one click in the morning and now your no date has a date. Same principal can be applied to the Daytona chrono hand.

Do you use a watch to tell what the date is, or your phone/computer/device? If you use your watch, then Sub Date. If not, ND Sub.

Get the Sub. Later on, if you'll want the date, you'll have plenty of time by then to pick the right ref for you, since the Sub Date has many of them. If not, you'll still have the original Sub, in its purest and most versatile form.

I find myself looking at my watch for the date...it's an old habit that will probably never die.
If you do this when you're signing papers and such, then the date is for you. If not, then the no date would work, too. |
