Nautilus 5712 vs Calatrava 5227G
Hi, newbie here and to watches in general. I only got one watch, a Rolex Datejust 41, which I chose over a Submariner at the time I bought it, and now to which I am fond of.
Now here goes the time to consider what I'm gonna buy myself next. I went to a local AD without knowing anything about PP and fell in love with the Calatrava 5227G. But then of course I went online, and almost universally people recommend the 5711. I tried to look and get on waiting lists and figured I got a better chance on the 5712 so now I'm on the waiting list for that (8-12 mos from an AD in the US) Which now puts me at asking what I should be buying - the 5227G is pure love while the 5712 is a "safe" choice. I'm 31yo, self-employed with my share of attending important functions and meetings, and I plan to make this watch an all-rounder, wearing it anywhere from an important meeting to strolling at the mall. I realize the 5227G is more closer to the PP brand, and somehow that is an upside for me. Any thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

All-rounder safe choice is the 5712/1A. Be patient and wait for the 5712.

Buy what you love and don't fall into the trap of buying the "hype"!

I know everyone will say buy the one you love. This is really good advice but consider versatility into the equation. The more versatile piece always wins with me. In this situation, I would pick the 5712. It can be dressed up or down.

Safe or not, the 5712/1a is an excellent choice. As is the 5227, but only you can decide - they wear totally differently. Good luck and take your time. Don't rush it - mistakes cost money.

The 5227G and 5712/1A are both very nice watches. However my suggestion is to try on as many different Patek watches on your wrist as you can at ADs and/or pre-owned stores. You may be surprised that there are many other watches you really like as well.
Just an observation, but from your 5227G photo, it appears you have a fairly large wrist size. Have you looked at some other watches besides the 5227 or the 5712? |

5712 of course, the coolest Nautilus IMHO, super comfortable, of my 5 watches, it's my favorite.
But get the one you love most, for me no doubt : 5712 but it is just so cool |

These two watches are so totally different to me. I would think the 5712 is the better choice of the two where you can only buy one. As they say buy both and avoid these agonizing decisions.

You've got a steel watch, and you love the 5227g, so get it to satisfy your passion and to round out your collection. It is the ultimate Calatrava, and the only dress watch you'll ever need. The hidden officer's case back is unique and permits a reflection of the beautiful movement so that you can watch it "in stereo".
The only thing is that they lose a significant amount of value. Consider buying second hand. |

Buy what you love and not what others tell you to get. I've owned both models but only kept the 5227. My favorite PP to date (yes even more than my Nautiluses).

Looks like I'm more confident buying the Calatrava then! I've been dreaming about it all weekend, and what I'll be engraving on that caseback :)
Gotta love that in RG also... never saw it in RG, but I'll be sure to try one on. Wouldn't RG be a problem though if I plan to use this watch casually? My use is more casual than it is business... I mean, I go to work everyday, and there we do smart business casual... and outside of work, I usually wear polos and chino shorts. |
