Patek 5227r Pricing

I am no Patek expert but i came across a Patek 5227r this weekend from an local AD for $17,000. This seems like really good deal, i could only find (4) listing in the classified that were relatively old and were never updated as sold, is this not a popular model? Just looking for some opinions.

Not really a popular model but that is a very attractive price.

That price is a steal. The price here is more than 17,000 in pounds!

I don't know about the popularity but it would be my dress watch of choice if I needed one

Well, unfortunately i am not in the position to buy a $17000 watch that was not planned for, i thought i may be able to try and flip it for a few thousand but it appears that i would have to sit on it too long for my liking.

I looked at this model, most of the listings are in the 27K region. Check Jomashop, Chrono 24 and you'll see what I mean. I don't know anything about Patek, but, if you can call a $17,000 watch a "steal" it sounds like it assuming it's in mint condition.

It is a great price if its all on the up and up. I do not think the model is popular.

Not a popular piece at all. Almost bought but decided would be too boring for me.

When Patek released the 5227 in 2013, it was a new case design and the 39mm size for a Calatrava was a first in line with the trend for larger watches. Other subsequent watch references have adopted this case design.

The thing is the 5227 was priced a bit high for a Calatrava and the demand has not kept up with supply, leading to excess inventory at ADs and this in turn leading to gray sellers getting them at a discount and passing them on to the public at a lower price.

The watch is a beautiful modern Calatrava. At that price, it is a good value!

I believe retail is twice that amount so a good price on an unpopular model. Having said that, it is my favorite Patek today.

My guess is that the production of 5227 in the three metals (G, R, J), outnumber the production numbers of the 5711/1A by several folds. Let's suppose an AD receives 3 pieces of the 5711/1A in a year. That AD probably receive 8-10 5227's a year. With this assumption, the sales number for the 5227 is going to be much higher than the 5711/1A.

If Patek makes 1200 5711/1A a year and the demand is for 2500 a year, then secondary market prices will be high. Also assuming Patek makes 3000 5227 a year and the demand is only for 2500, then the secondary market price will go down. At the end of the year, more 5227 will be sold than the 5711/1A because of the production numbers and Patek receives payment from ADs whether the watches are sold to end customers or not. However if ADs cannot sell their stock of 5227, the watches will make it to the gray market one way or another at a noticeable discount.

So IMO the 5227 is not necessarily an unpopular watch, but relatively to other watches like the 5711/1A, it is "less" popular. There are thousands of people who purchase the 5227 and enjoy this watch every year.

It just happens that many TRF discussion tend to be steered towards purchasing watches that "holds its value". But like others have said repeatedly in other threads, get the watch that you enjoy wearing and that will ultimately give you the most happiness

is the classic modern Calatrava watch ; people this days like complications or sporty watches, so not that popular but still a staple on the patek repertoire. Price is just fair.
Good luck

Didn't know it tanked so badly on the secondary market. The number I had in mind was also around 27k for bnib.

It's a gorgeous, gorgeous watch. If I wore dress watches, it'd be my first pick.

If I wore dress watches, the 5227 would be the one I'd pick today. Tempting at US$17k.

17k brand new from AD? that's over 50% off. I can't believe it. If I know the AD I will buy it now.

I doubt it is brand new. It has to be pre-owned, although I will wait for OP to clarify this.

No AD will sell you a watch anywhere close to their wholesale cost unless you are a large volume gray dealer.

Forgive me for being so harsh but this thread is a joke. The guy has zero interest in the watch and wants to know if it is a good deal and gauge the demand soley for flipping purposes so he can make a quick buck on a true collector who really wants the piece. That isn't what this forum is about and threads like this personally get on my nerves.
