Rolex at Afternoon Tea

For my belated Birthday celebration last week I chose to go to the Lanesborough hotel in London for Afternoon Tea. It was a wonderful experience. The restaurant is very grand and palatial with its decadent blue and white décor but the service was friendly, relaxed and exemplary.

The sandwiches were delicious and the best I have ever had, the bread of walnuts and sultanas didn't even need the cheese filling, and they were all so good we had a second round. The beautiful pastries were the star of the show as you'd expect from a chef trained in the 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Le Bristol, Paris, and they looked absolutely stunning presented in the three tier style.

The place is not cheap but for Afternoon Tea in London I don't think it can be beat and I highly recommend it.

How does it compare to pre-renovation Lanesborough? I haven't been since they re opened as it was closed for a long time for renovations. Even a few years ago though it looked great, so I'm sure now its even better.

Looks like a good time

Dear AK797

Afternoon Tea is a British tradition that is making a much needed comeback. Chatting away over a pot of decent tea is one of lifes joys.

When you drink tea, you share a pot and pour tea into each others cup and it is far more intimate than washing some coffee down your throat. It just not is the same.

I am in Spain at the moment and we often take a pot of tea with buttered scones, jam and cream in our balcony overlooking the pool. Gin and Tonic (another Great British tradition) usually happens most evenings at around 7.00pm.

Thank you for a delightful thread and I hope you told that bloody woman to take her elbows off the table.

Back in the UK, my wife has a collection of 47 teapots on display in the dining room, ranging from Victorian ones to a disgustingly pornographic one and we often drink from them in rotation.

I hope you send in similar ones on your many trips to London.

Regards

Mick

Cheers guys, I just had some Ikea meatballs so I'm envious of myself, but they were nice and tasty memories. Pastry chef is an artist. The Paris-Brest with praline cream was to die for. Had three extra.

Thanks gents. It was my first time at the Lanesborough as it was recommended by a friend. I agree that along with the language and the NHS, Afternoon Tea is one of the great glories of England.

There was not much point with the elbows as on that empty gold couch were previously sat a family with two young kids who were clearly full and very slouchy . That's what I like about Tea, it has a sort of formal ceremony but served in a relaxed manner.

Happy Birthday. I highly recommend going there for cocktails in the evening too. I took my then girlfriend now wife there on a whim on the way back from a black tie event when we were students. We felt about 20 feet tall.

Never let it be said that the British are not creatures of habit, a perfect way to enjoy an afternoon and your right Mick, coffee is just no match.

Happy birthday Neil and I'm not sure which looks better the pastries or the watch. That said I can afford the pastries :-)

Will have to take Mrs Shaky there me thinks
