It's not just resale or snobbery. When I see someone with a Speedy, Sub or Datejust, I say to myself that that person is a watch enthusiast. I would not think that of a R Weil wearer. They are nice watches, I once owned one, but they are not top shelf.

The Gibson watch looks great, but it is HUGE. Here is a neat link I found...

Is he a Rolling Stones fan? That zenith is pretty cool.

I just cannot see paying that much for a RW. I would maybe take him window shopping, let him try on a few, let him be wooed by an AD sales person; basically it should be easy to get him hooked then get him an OP, Datejust, or Speedy.

I agree the resale value will be bad, but what can I say if he likes that watch he likes that watch you can always suggest the fact that the resale value will be extremely bad to say the least.

But at the end of the day it's time for him to make a decision - that might teach him a lesson or two later on.

Good luck

RW is like Michael Kors to me, a fashion watch. Sure it might have a better fit or finish but it's still a fashion watch

To know the future is to be trapped by it

I would not buy the RW watch. Not a brand fan and think at 5K you can do much better. As the earlier picture of Clapton showed and B.B. King Rolex is the watch. Throw in Stevie Ray Vaughn and you have some great musicians who love Rolex. Look in the pre-owned market with our Trusted Sellers and you can get him a watch that he will have for a life time. I also like the Speedmaster Profession and would maybe get him a couple of cool straps that match the guitar strap.

Most of us have made this mistake. You may not be able to convince him now but he may regret this decision in a couple of years. I have taken many baths from my watch purchasing decisions. For almost the same money, there are many great choices.

1st rule of gift-buying is get them what they like, not what you like.

Also, that headstock inlay next to the date is pretty cool.

FYI, saw 2 pre-order asking prices of $3,200 and $3,600 on the internet.
By the time it actually gets to the store, I would bet that you could pick it up for around $3,000.

Certainly understand not wanting to pay $5K for a Raymond Weil. I wouldn't.

I bought one of the early Parsifal models in 1996, and still going strong. Asked my Rolex AD about RW (they carry them), and he complemented their build quality. Of course, it's all standard movements for RW.

Glad to have one, and still enjoy wearing it for the chrono function. I got my $2.5K worth out of mine. (Photo of my model from internet). Did one $600 overhaul over 20+ years, and still keeps excellent time.

I'm the proud owner of a Chronograph carbon dial Parsifal. I bought new and love it. RW have amazing time pieces and is still a family company. Is young comparing with other firms but they build beautiful watches. Many of them with ETA movements like many other brands but this is not a bad thing.
Personally I would buy him a Rolex because I like them more than other firm but RW is a good watch too.

$5K would be criminal on this model.

Rolex is a bit too much for a college student though. I'd pick up an Omega, a Jaeger Master Date, or something along those lines.

That 5k will simmer down to less that 1k in a few years. Let him know that and hope he will understand.
Take him to a watch store and may be let him see some Rolex ,JLC,IWC and Omega models

Get your son what he wants. Let him enjoy the special piece while he can.

Many teenagers look at a Rolex as a watch that "old people" wear and may not want to identify themselves with the watch brand.

Quite true, I couldn't have imagined getting a Rolex before I was almost 40, some guys in my schools, not even college, had subs, and I found that ridiculous, they had small wrists and the watches looked huge on them, almost sure their parents chose for them, when at 18 my mother got me a watxh I chose a Breitling chrono, which was a financial and horological mistake, the AD had Rolex, but there was no way I wanted to be associated woth Rolex at the time, in any case it was a good lesson, I do understand that getting the RW is a financial and horological mistake, but the present is for him, not for you, and if he wants that one then get it, just not at 5K...

Looks like this particular RW is specifically made to appeal to audience like your son, a guitar nut. You and any sane watch guy would not give it serious thought. If your son intends to start watch collection, he should be educated about watch history, values in movement and classic design. If he just wants that watch as an inspiration piece, watch making lesson won't mean much.

A 5k RW is a way too much when compared to Omega, Tudor, or even other RW models. It's new release and worst time to get it. The chance is you can buy this exact model at deep discount in 6 months or a year. Not many watch pays tribute to musician so I think this RW worths collecting for your son. Perhaps buy him a nice guitar for graduation and save the watch gift later.

They are pretty much worthless preowned

Go to Leslie Gold:

Go to Leslie Gold in Los Angeles. It is a Raymond Weil AD that offers gray market level discounts on Raymond Wells. The watch will cost you little more than a Hamilton chronograph, your son will love it, and your son will learn to appreciate mechanical watches.
