Where do they go ?

Not having box and papers could lead some people to think the watch was stolen, but there may be legitimate reasons for not having box and papers, such as didn't care / knew were valuable, lost in move, flooding/fire events, traded for cash on pawn shop (imagine common in Vegas or Atlantic City , etc.)

I once bought an Omega SMP coaxial without paperwork and the seller guy said the box and papers were throw away by his ex-wife

Yea I keep all of mine but I have bought watches from people who lost the box / papers. I use that to get more money off.

When going with a high end watch I only buy with all that unless it's a killer deal.

When buying a cheap beater, I could careless.

As for my shoe receipts/boxes, I sure don't. Then again, my shoes don't cost upwards of $5k.

Watch boxes/papers are slightly different for me. To an OCD person, these could very well be birth certificates of their first child. I keep all of them, to my wife's chagrin, in a Tupperware in the basement. Boxes, papers, coffins, hangers - you name it, I've got it. It's a sickness, I know.

In the event I decide to sell these, or hand them down to a loved one, I'll have all the effects that go with it. Makes it even more special, I think.

I may be a minority here, but looking at the box/pamphlets that my first watch came in is like stepping in a time warp. It's entertaining for me - same feeling when I read through my parents' National Geographic circa late 70's & 80's - especially the ads for cars/appliances/fads. We've come a long way, baby!

I see your point. I do keep boxes and receipts to my luxury brand shoes say any shoes over $300. Shoes that I don't consider disposable. Same kind of goes for watches. Under $500 I probably won't keep the box.

As far as Rolex and watch boxes I certainly keep them even have my first GMT Master 2 box from twenty + years ago. Then again I am addictive and obsessive. Many of the watches without boxes and papers out there are or were owned by gents that were not like us. This makes places like DavidSW incredibly important so we have a place to go for complete sets.

Errr ummm... High end watches are way more expensive than
shoes or clothing ... Unless it's some ridiculous designer charging
Outrageous prices !!!
Like some high end watch companies ....
But yes I do keep everything the watch comes with new...
My first Rolex only came with the box no papers ...
My current line up has everything ...

In my experience wives hate empty boxes taking up space. I had to rescue mine from the trash more than once when she told the housekeeper to dispose of them so she would have more room for shoes/handbags.

I agree with you OP. I find it odd that the percentage is so high on used watches. I don't care about the boxes but the papers I would never toss.

I always try to keep the box and papers. But it seems the common reasons for not having them is--

1. Don't care about them
2. Don't have room for them
3. Lost them when moving
4. Wife tosses them
5. Flood or other disaster
6. Stolen (hopefully does not apply to anyone here)

Cru, I don't buy many pairs of shoes for $7000+. So I keep the Rolex boxes, unlike my shoe boxes!

I have all that stuff.

I know I'll never need it, but whoever inherits all my stuff might.

I challenge you to think of one other thing, that you use consistently and daily, that you keep the packaging/receipt for ...

Appliances?
Clothing?
Electronics?
Furniture?
Car (outside of financing documents possibly for record-keeping because there may be a continuing payment obligation)?
Food?
Other jewelry?
Dishware?
Pets?

Unless you buy something for the singular purpose of "collecting," you're not going to keep the proof of purchase and dressing that the item arrived in (as evidenced above). Most people buy at least their first watch specifically as a utility item and become a collector sometime later.

It's funny but Bateman and Clockwork's Alex are also popular here, what is it about Rolex and psychopaths...
