1966 GMT. Real or fake?
I was advised of the vintage thread, so here I am. Any help is greatly appreciated!
am more familiar with the modern Rolex watches. What to look for what not to look for all of that, but when it comes to the older tritium watches, I'm lost. I'm hoping someone can help point me into a good direction here. I have an opportunity to buy a 1966 GMT watch. The pictures I have are less than mediocre at best, but from comparing them to Google images, it looks close. Can someone provide me with any information for authenticity? Also, let's assume it does not run, what can I expect to pay to get it back up and running, worst case scenario? I have been told that the movement and case is original, the band is not, but is supposed to be authentic Rolex. Any help is greatly appreciated |

The watch is genuine. Nothing in your photos depicts anything indicating it is "fake."
Why are your concerns?

2.1m for me and stamped IV 68. You'll likely need a full service @~$1k is what I paid recently. The cost to relume the 24hr hand I have no idea.
Case looks fat and that insert alone is fetching a real premium. Very nice find! |

Looks like it's in great condition. Crown guards are sharp and everything looks original save the band, which was disclosed and still worth something in it's own right. Hard to tell if there's splotching of the 6 o'clock marker or if that's just reflection from the crazing. Given the quality of the rest of the dial I'd hope it's just the crystal. Has the earlier type of Mk 1 lume, as it should (puffy and not waffling) given the serial. This type usually has phosphorescence to UV if I remember correctly.
Give us some more pictures when you get it! or DM me if you don't want it, haha. |

Nice find. Pop off that ratty old insert, I'll swap you for a brand new one :)
