Since I don't know how to post a picture, guess. It's a model that was housed in an oyster quartzcase, or vice versa actually. The bracelet is not identical: having three gold middle links, instead of the OQs two. It is 36 mm and oyster perpetual. Gold dial which is beautiful, gold hour bars and the minute track has both 1 minute and 30 second marks(very small!). I don't believe any other Rolex dial is so marked. Have also both original inner and outer boxes. They loved it at Rolex Wynn's on the Strip in Vegas. The serial denotes mfg in 1978. One year before the release of the Oyster Quartz models. Interesting that Rolex used the same case for an oyster perpetual then the oyster quartz. Since the 1630 and the all SS 1530 came before the 17000 series. Wonder what the thinking was at the time at Rolex?

From what I have read the quartz movement was not ready so they marketed the case design with an automatic movement. It was designed by Gerald Genta to compete with the popular AP models of the day. Its the first Rolex with a sapphire crystal and the 1530 and 1630 are the same size which which was different as the date models were usually smaller.
I just parted with my 1630 but still have a 1530.
Many articles are written on the 1530 and 1630 just Google it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought 5100 was the first Rolex with sapphire crystal

Always read it was the 1530 and 1630 but Google says you are correct.

Well, the 1530 and 1630 were the first Rolex Oysters with a sapphire crystal. The 5100 does not have an oyster case.
