Icon7 New Purchase Advice

Hello!

This is my first time posting. I inherited a gold submariner that is great but it is a bit flashy for everyday wear. SO I am looking to purchase my first watch. For a while I went back and forth between new vs. preowned. I decided to go for a preowned. Now I keep going back and forth between the Datejust II, Datejust II 41mm, and Submariner (stainless steel). I am leaning more towards a Datejust because it seems like everybody has a ss sub. I realize that this is primarily a very personal preference but am curious to hear what everybody's preferences.

My questions for you folks are as follows:

1. Watch: Datejust or Submariner?

2. Bracelet: Jubilee or oyster bracelet?

3. Tax: I live in NYC and understand that tax is high. I am frequently in Florida so was therefore considering waiting until the next time I am there but I am antsy. NJ is tax free (?) so I was also considering that.

4. Store: Should I go to a Rolex store, a AD, jewelry exchange retail, online store, or RFClassifieds?

Any advice or information would be much appreciated. I'd also really like to hear other people's experiences in purchasing.

Thank you in advane!

No need to rush as you've got the gold sub...take your time and try on everything you're considering as many times as you can.

We do like pics here, by the way.

Thank you for the quick reply. This is my watch now. I don't wear it though. I'm only 31 and feel it is a bit too flashy for me at this point. Hence why I want something a little less blingy.

I get it on the blingy part. But that looks great. You should hang on to that and rock it.

YG Nipple Sub is very cool, and I think it would be cool to get the SS Sub. However, when you say everyone has a Sub, is this an assumption from being on the internet or that in your area, you have seen many in the wild?

For me, I thought the same thing but n reality, I have only seen about 4 SS subs in the wild in the last year. And one of them, was a Kermt...

Get that Sub insured....lol

You really can't go wrong. Since you have a Sub, maybe you want to go for a Datejust just to change it up a bit? Regardless, if you do get a DJ I'd go Jubilee all the way.

Take a look in Wempe on 5th. I find that they have a really great selection (all brands) and everyone's very eager to help. I've also heard rumors that they'll let you purchase a watch and wear it out on your wrist while shipping the box to an address in NJ to save tax, but I haven't confirmed it myself.

DJ and Jubilee. My brief (Sub) experience of the oyster is that it shows scratches on its wide flat links far more in 4 weeks than my DJ36 jubilee did in 15 years daily wear.

And if you go jubilee, it ought to be fluted bezel for the traditional look, more reflection of light, and once again so as not to show scratches.

I think the Datejust would look great on the Jubilee bracelet.

You can't go wrong with any of your choices. What I like is irrelevant in your decision - it's what you like that counts.

I suggest buying wherever you want, shipping to your Florida address perhaps to save sales tax? Otherwise, buy from a reputable seller (look at their feedback, posting history, etc.) here on the forum.

Classifieds

Thank you all for the awesome feedback! SO HELPFUL! I was hesitant to post but I am so glad that I did :-).

Any thoughts about purchasing on rf classifieds?

As far as the ss sub - there are a lot of people wearing them. Obviously - they are awesome watches. I just want something a touch more unique/different. Yet when I see them wearing it I stare.

I think I am narrowing down on the Datejust 41 jubilee. Just not sure about face color. Black, white or silver. hmmmmmmm.

Silver DJ41 on Jubilee with your sweet Blue Sub. Or a LVc.

Such a good observation. I used to think everyone had a SS Sub.

I rarely see them in the wild unless I am at the casino...then I see expensive timepieces everywhere, lol.

Try on a SS sub and a DJ w smooth and fluted bezels and see which feels most at home.

FYI, NJ does have sales tax- 6.875%. Only way to save on sales tax is to ship from out of state assuming the store you buy from doesn’t have a store in the state you are shipping to. Good luck !

agree wear the crap out of it. I would consider a steel GMT as a second watch. Can travel with it and keep the gold sub when you want to put on your "baller" hat

Baller: this is old 70 s and early 80 s slang for dealers who sold eight balls of cocaine.. it went on in the late eighties to mean anybody who is rolling in money and dealing in drugs... in the early 90s it was attributed to rap stars and anybody who was just rolling in the dough... It is currently (after late 90s) attributed to ball players rolling in the dough.

i would purchase from a trusted seller here. if you look at the who's who section, you'll see a lot of the same names popping up; they are usually the go to guys. hope it helps, enjoy the hunt !

A Sub flies way under the radar imo, unless you know what you're looking at. There are so many diver variations, homages, copies, and counterfeits, that I think a Sub generally gets ignored.

A DJ in any variation is great, I have a DJII fluted, but I've found it draws more attention than my Sea Dweller or explorer. Perhaps because of the polished bracelet or fluted bezel.

If you go the DJ route, I'd suggest a smooth bezel with dark dial, like a rhodium, if you want less flash,

Btw that gold Sub is a beauty!

I disagree unless you live in a bad part of town. Imho best looking sub around. Wear with pride. Most wouldn't even notice it isn't a Michael Kors!!!!

I understand that you are keeping the YG Sub but I doubt if any other Rolex that you may consider buying could live up to it.

I used to say DJ but I have realized that I appreciate Submariner 114060 more than I did with the DJ. Submariner is a perfect every year watch for every event you could thro your watch at

Go to a large AD or a Rolex boutique and try everything on. See what fits, what color you like and what bracelet style is for you. Then read the reviews and talk to a few Trusted Sellers here on TRF and see what the watch you want costs. I like the DJ line-up and have owned several DJ II's over the years and they are a good fitting watch and do have a lot of presence. The polished center links and bezel are strong and shinny. If you are trying to be low key this may be too much. I would look at the 42 mm polar Explorer II or the ND Submariner. Low key watches that hold their value.

Take a look at the all black GMT. With the polished center links it has a bit of bling to it and sure is nice. I was very happy to choose it over the sub I went to buy.

Also, the black DJ with fluted bezel and oyster bracelet is a bold stunning-yet-subtle one.

The jubilee is growing on me, but seemed a bit too busy on my wrist.

Yes. I'm an owner too but think you should keep the nipple and add a LVc if you want a newer ceramic sub.
