Analysis paralysis
I'd like to solicite some advice from the experts.
As I've reached milestones in my life I've marked them with watches. My friends never understood when I came home from my first co-op job with a "$700 watch" at the age of 19. It was a very cool (at the time) Movado Olympian which I still have. In my 20's, I had my own money and nobody to support. I had visions of buying watches left and right. To avoid blasting through my savings, I figured I'd shoot for the brass ring to avoid wasting money on lesser watches building up to the goal. So I went with a Rolex date 15210. It worked. It was the perfect watch for me for over a decade. That was until watches got really big suddenly.... and the Watch I intentionally bought to look right on my wrist now seemed undersized and a touch too dressy with jeans. In my 30's I wanted something different, but I'm a student of the classics. I alway wanted a speedmaster. There were too many options, but like the highlander, there could be only one: The speedy pro 3570.50.00. I love that watch... The weight of wearing it, the glow of the luminescents in the shade, the domed crystal...and winding it. It re-lit my interest in continuing to acquire watches. Now I'm 40 (41 next month). I may only get one watch in the next 10 years, and I need to make it count. I need another Rolex. I was going back and forth between th submariner no date and the Blue/black GMT. Leaning towards the sub I rediscovered the Daytona with the ceramic bezel. Now that is a watch. I suddenly needed to have the white one to make my 40's worth it. But I don't know if I'll be able to get one before I'm 50. So my conundrum.... Sub, BLNR, or 5 years waiting for the Daytona. What would you do? Any feedback welcome! Thanks in advance. |

If I wanted a Daytona and it takes five years, I'd pay the premium in a heartbeat or buy PM Daytona.

The White Face 115600 DaytonaC is a special watch. If it were going to be my last watch I think I would go for it.
The wait will be painful and you will dream about the watch a lot, well I did anyway. The premium for getting it from a grey dealer will be approximately $4k but if it's your last watch then you might be Okay with the premium to have it now. Otherwise, get on a few AD lists and hope for "The Call" Good Luck & Welcome to TRF!

Depends how patient you are in waiting for a Daytona C. No way, as in no way, would I pay those absurd premiums for one. I'd rather save the extra cash, wait a little while longer and buy a PM version with a ceramic dial at a discounted price.

The extra cash for a platinum Daytona is quite a huge chunk.... just saying we are not talking saving a few more dollars we are talking about $20+k

First of all, there is not one single watch in existence I would wait 5 years for. Actually, any amount of years.
This is really an easier decision than you're thinking...either the sub or GMT holds its value very well. Buy right pre-owned, and then if a Daytona magically comes along, then you can flip it with very little loss. Win-win. |

Yup as Larry says buy a subc now, LVc is my preference, and then flip for the D500 when it comes up, if you prefer that one at the time. No point having a bare wrist for years.

Well the new Daytona is fantastic. No arguments there. However, if you are looking to make a run at something now might I suggest the Sd4k. I have the BLNR and the sub-c a well but I feel like the sub c blends the two very well. The lugs, general case shape is similar to the BLNR but it has looks which more closely mirror the SubC. Definitely my favorite Rolex (at least of those I own or have owned).

I have the solution to your problem.....buy the BLNR or the sub now. When you purchase the watch put your name down for the Daytona, the AD will then know your serious. When you get the call for the Daytona you can flip whichever one you get for probably no loss or even a profit. You may end up keeping both who knows but it's a win win this way.

Almost pulled the trigger last week or so when I had an opportunity to try both the Black and White iterations of the Daytona on. White one definitely was my favorite on the wrist...BTW! That said, the only thing that stopped me was the fact that in order for me to comfortably make this move, I would have to have traded both my SDC4K...and my LVC...both of which I really love! So in the end I decided to give som more time in hopes that down the road I could either just add to my collection, or at the very most only have to trade in one of those 2 watches!

It is a great watch but I'd argue the resale/ gray market prices say more about supply than anything else.

Put your name on the wait list for the Daytona. Buy which ever one of the others you like most at the lowest price possible. Keep saving for the Daytona and when it comes time either just add it or sell the one you've been wearing for five years to help fund it. No opinions as to which is better, Sub or GMT. That's your call.

This was my thinking as well but substituting the Sub for the BLNR. you could even go used SubC for not much more than the premium to own the DaytonaC today. Then when you get the call for the Daytona you could flip the Sub for not much loss or potentially keep it! Congrats on a great first world problem to solve Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The perfect decision for your situation seems to be getting a no date sub and putting your name on the list for the Daytona. When you finally get the call, you can decide if you want to add the watch or flip your sub (with a very easy to swallow loss) towards it. Worst case scenario, you'd be renting the sub (very cheaply) while waiting for the Daytona.
I own both these models, they're both very special in different ways. I'm sure you'll get enormous enjoyment out of them. Good luck! |

Awesome feedback guys! Really appreciate it. Yes a first world problem indeed.
On principal, I can't pay a markup for the Daytona. I'm horribly cheap and to me paying a markup both perpetuates the "flippers" that are clogging up the waitlists and also takes away from the coolness of getting rare watch. Several comments suggested picking up the sub c now in the interim. I like that approach. I buy in relatively low now and if I ever get the call I can use the sub to offset the Daytona. Also perhaps I'll realize I don't need two chronos after all and I can pocket the 5k 😊 |
