Calling Australian members......

Hey guys, a mate of mine in the UK is a WIS, and has quite a collection of nice pieces.

He's going to be relocating to Australia over the next few years - family already there, and he'll be retiring from his current job and moving at that time.

What he's unsure of is the WIS culture out there, and the potential to buy and sell the way that we do in the UK, where there are numerous forums, and of course the dreaded 'bay. Given his uncertainty of the 'market' he was thinking that he would offload most of his watches in the UK before he moves full time to Aus, and a new lifestyle.

Is he thinking along the right lines, or is there a bouyant pre-owned market out there, with easy ways to sell? His collection includes a few Rolexes including modern DSSD/LV, and older (Red Sub).

Thanks in advance, for any feedback/comments. Cheers!

There doesn't appear to be an "easy " way to sell pre loved Rolexes here in Australia. There are a number of aftermarket/non Ad dealers some highly respected as well BUT they are generally in the business of selling Rolexes, and buying them always at wholesale prices. Eg lets say you had a 2002 14060M in near mint condition with box, papers etc. On the Forums such as this you might get $3,850-$4,000 AUD . I sold one last year using E bay for $4250.00 to a buyer in Sydney. But if I took it to a reputable non AD dealer I guess they would only pay around $2,500AUD .Some dealers will trade but earlier this year I wanted to trade a 114270 Explorer 1 and was told.."thanks but no thanks...not interested"
Maybe!!
So in short I think the Forums are the best way to sell.

I've managed to both buy and sell on eBay Australia, without a hitch or being scammed.

As knoffie mentioned, the dealers of watches will pay nothing and ask a substantial premiumover what can be achieved here.

We're a small population base, wide spread for the most part, hence our similar experiences.
In Tasmania, there is nobody local who would even take on a Rolex, Panerai or JLC, if they were even informed of what they were looking at.

Having said that, I've found fellow Aussie WIS to be friendly and trustworthy, when you come across them.

Cheers
Richard

I moved from UK to OZ 3 years ago. i am 27 now. It is not the same but there is still a market and i buy quite a bit internationally and locally. Unlike UK ( 9 pounds or something)customs is only charged on items over $1000 . I woudl not worry if i was him, if he want to chat or know more just give me a PM

prices are generally higher in Oz so maybe bring them over and sell them when in the land of plenty and make a few quid to pay for beer and steak?

Comments posted above are all basically right but if you are patient you can buy and sell at resonable prices.

AD's don't buy or trade second hand watches.

We are generally a friendly bunch of people.
