Advice for a college student's first nice watch

I'm a senior college student and I'm trying to decide which watch I want to purchase after school and I have it narrowed down to 2 choices. Either the Tudor Fastrider Black Shield (red with rubber strap) or the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master (blue dial). I love both of course.

I love the fact that the Black Shield is completely black ceramic and how sporty yet different it looks. Not to mention the fact that I could always buy the leather strap to switch them out. Also it has the easiest quick-change mechanism for the date. Plus the fact that it's less than half the price of the YM

I love the YM of course too because I like the fact that it's stainless steel yet with a platinum bezel. To me this model is the closest I can come to owning a (partial) platinum watch. Plus I think the blue dial is one of the sweetest-looking blues that Rolex has. Plus, I've always loved my father's Submariner, which the YM obviously borrows its look from. And of course, the fact that it has that crown emblem that we all know and love.

For me, this will be a difficult decision. Obviously my wallet is screaming, "Black Shield!" but I still love that Yacht-Master. As a young guy, I've always worn Fossil watches and my current watch is a Swiss-Made Fossil Automatic, which makes a nice tide-me-over transitional watch between the kid watches of my past and the adult watches of my foreseeable future. That being said, I can't decide if the Black Shield would feel like a higher-end transitional watch to me or if it would feel like the luxury watch I always wanted.

By the Black Shield to celebrate finishing school.

Purchase the Yacht Master with your first bonus cheque.

Win / Win!

IMO the black shield looks cool but for your first watch I would go for something a little more timeless. You may outgrow or tire of the design. The blue dial YM is IMO one of the better looking versions of the YM. Do you like the exp2 or explorer model? Timeless and somewhat under the radar for a young college grad.

I'm gonna be the curmudgeon that says save your money, get the job, then get the watch. If you are asking me to take money out of the equation, then it's YM 500%

I'd take the YM only because as it's been stated before, it's timeless.
You can keep it for the rest of your life and it will not go out of date.
But honestly, pick the one you feel most like "yourself" in. The Tudor doesn't do it for me, but neither does the YM. But that doesn't stop me from telling you not to buy either of them!
Try on them both before deciding, think about it good before buying something you could regret. Be very sure on which one you pick!

The YM is a lot of coin, but the better watch by a mile. If your wallet is screaming Tudor, sounds like the YM would be a bit of a financial stretch. Each of us are different, but based on my situation at the point you find yourself now, making the financial stretch now for the YM is a harder recovery than it will be later in life. Now that I'm older and possibly wiser, I would say spending less is better right now.
Tough decision, but unless you're prospects of replacing the outlay are quick and assured, I'd go Tudor.
When I was 22, I would have ignored this advice and bought a YM.
Good luck.

well one costs twice the other. If I had the choice between the two the YM would be a no brainer. this is my son's....

Between the two? No competition: YM all day long. Because it has staying power.

Something to keep forever. That particular Tudor is very now/happening/trendy. Still has it's place in time. However, the blue dial YM will be cool even 50 yrs from now when you pass it on to your children.

Welcome. Both wonderful. I bet in time you will have both. And then set down the road to being watch poor. It's a sickness without a cure.

If you can afford it, YM. If you can't, save more money and then buy the YM. It will motivate you to save.

I'm not a huge fan of either, but I'd choose the YM out of the two you listed. I'd prefer a simple SubC as an everyday watch.

I vote YM for sure. I have been wanting a SS/YG Blue Sub now for a year, but that blue dial YM is nice, may sway my thinking....

If you are already thinking that you will be unsatisfied with the Tudor then in my experience you 100% will.

However, I really like the Yachtmaster as well.

So, you can't lose.

IMHO, that flue faced YM is one of Rolex nicest offerings.

Get the Rolex. If you buy the Tudor, a few years later, you will have wished you bought the Rolex. You will then flip the Tudor for a Rolex and pay more than you would have just buying the Rolex in the first place.

Buy once, buy right. I learned that one the hard way.

Both nice watches, but I prefer the YM

So, either one or just let your money fester in the bank (which is what I would do in your position)

Spring for the Rolex if you truly can afford it. You won't scratch your Rolex itch via the black shield. Make sure you don't walk in and pay retail + tax though :) shop around and get a good price as always.

Since this watch will mark your college graduation, I would go with the more timeless option, to avoid the risk you you getting tired of the watch but being reluctant to sell because of its meaning. This means the YM, imo. Good luck with the choice.

YM. But a more affordable Rolex may be the way to go at this point in time.

Wow, I really appreciate all of the advise. I think honestly I'd rather go with the Yacht-Master. I probably will get the Black Shield at some point but I can definitely see why it could go out of style vs the YM (or any Oyster Perpetual model for that matter) which will remain timeless. As far as it being a case of Rolex vs. Tudor, I want to make sure that I don't simply choose Rolex because of its being status symbol, which was my way of thinking at one point. As far as other models go, there are other Rolexes I love of course but as someone who may only be able to afford 1 Rolex over the next decade or 2, I want to make sure I don't compromise and regret not getting that one that's truly my favorite (precious metals not counting) which in this case is definitely the YM. I appreciate the advice, y'all!
