Never was a fan of Datejust...
I never really appreciated the Datejust... although my first Rolex was a Datejust, it never grew on me. Fast forward 20 some years and a good friend sells me his worn out and what looked like water damaged 16620 (first image) for $600. He was a hard working guy who spent all day in the sun, the dial and hands were bleached from extreme sun exposure, the bracelet broken and crystal chipped. The dial had some weird stuff going on...still not sure if it was water damage or just the sun. The moment showed no signs of water, although it needed a complete service
I spent a few weeks looking for a new dial and finally found a really nice example from @Rigbot, then shipped it off to Rik in Florida. After about 3 months in his spa it returned today and looks just amazing...I think I may just appreciate the Datejust a bit more now. Great job Rik, it looks like a brand new watch! |

Ah, the classic Datejust. Great watch. Way underrated in the vintage Rolex world, IMHO. I love mine.

As my post title says, I never was a fan but Ive grown to appreciate the Datejust especially these earlier versions. I really like the engine turned bezel on the 16220 and I think this period correct dial really looks great with the bezel. I haven't grown fond enough to keep this one though...I restored this as a gift to my son for graduation. It will be his first vintage (if this could be considered vintage) watch and first Rolex. Hopefully he will cherish it and will be the beginning of his collection. |

Very cool. Great job by Rik again.
Glad you found an appreciation for a great watch. And at $600 plus repairs, a great deal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
