The only thing, this version of the Apple Watch has built in cellular and will use the same phone number on your phone. This makes this watch different from the previous versions.

There have been times when I was annoyed because I had no easy way to carry my cell phone. This would solve that. I find this feature alone is a game changer.

That said it could never replace my Rolex or any of the others but it could be a great addition.

Like i said earlier, comparing the sales numbers of a $200 electronic gadget to an $8,000 Rolex is like comparing the number of mopeds sold vs Aston Martins. One does not compete with the other even if both share the same bottom line function

That comparison seems very apples to oranges.

In other news, more Giant Bicycles were sold than Porsches last year.

Nooooo!!!

It's a very smart marketing strategy called "brand perception."

It will not effect Rolex sales in any way cause the market segment going for apple watches wouldn't be thinking of Rolex in the first place. What it does is elevate the perceptions of Apple Watch wearers - nothing more!

Bottom line is that Apple watches are soulless, it's a technology that will be outdated in a couple of years and surely cannot be passed down thru generations.

Reminds me of an article I was reading in ablogtowatch a few months ago. Something along the lines of comparing a £1.99 digital watch from a pound shop to a Rolex. The point being the cheap digital is more accurate than the Rolex.

Maybe so, but then a photo is more accurate than a Monet.

A Rolex is a work of art. I don't know much about watches, but I think it's a tribute that man is able to build something out of multiple tiny mechanical moving parts, that is self powering. Amazing.

I think people on this forum highly underestimate the impact of the smart watch.

Example: My wife wears a Nomos, she LOVES it and chose it over just about everything on the market. However, she LOVES her fitbit. She wears it on the other wrist. It reads her her texts, lets her know when she has an incoming call, tells here when she has not been active, keeps track of her sleep, watches her heart rate while excersizing. She LOVES her fitbit.

Truth is I am tempted to buy her an Apple watch. Guess what will happen to her beloved mechanical watch when that happens?

I do think alot of people who would buy a second or even a first Rolex will choose an apple watch and then spend the extra that would buy a Rolex on something else.

Hell If I didnt value being disconnected I think I would wear the Apple watch especially the new LTE version for all of its added benefits. I simply dont want that type of connectivity, but I think I am in the minority.

I've heard that before and I've even seen studies in the 70s to that effect but actually compare the time keeping. Most cases a Rolex will outperform cheap quartz, or at least in my experience over several months. Apple Watch should be atomically sync'd however. Thermocompensated quartz or HEQ is different.

I'd be remised if I didn't also question, how accurate the smart watch will be when it stops working in however many years. Even an unserviced Rolex, will last much longer than any smart watch.

Say an EMP attack somewhere happened, then a smart watch would also, not be very accurate bc it would not be running.

Lost in the wilderness, I'd go with my perpetual Explorer 2 and use its compass feature to find my way home.

Lots more reasons why I think we could argue mechanical to be more reliable when needed.

It's disposable... Enough said. I know I'll be able to pass my rolex onto my son. I think an apple watch will become obsolete within a few software update cycles.

They've turned a non-consumable commodity into a consumable one

Uh. What? Apple? Watch? Hmmmm. What does a rather transient techno thingy whose innards WILL disintegrate into uselessness in about five to seven years have to with a watch that could EASILY last for over 50 years with very little maintenance?

Electronic devices based on micro/nano logic paths literally corrode with use over time.

Rolex mechanical watches won't run forever but they will very easily outlast an Apple wztch.

Do they sell more hamburgers than cheeseburgers? Cheese makes all the difference for me, even in a Big Mac, tastes so different without it.

To me the big mac is made because of the secret sauce aka 1000 island dressing.

To quote Rhett Butler; "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." It's a square thingy that tells time in an unimaginative and sterile way. Further, it needs charging frequently. Where is the outrage? Using power from GASP! fossil fuel power plants. Oh, the humanity.

I'm actually surprised Casio isn't #1 in volume, I mean just look at all the variations of g-shocks alone. You see them everwhere, Walmarts, sporting goods stores, even electronic stores.

I'm laughing all the way to the bank, then to the AD to buy another Rolex. All thanks to Apple.
