Date window position

Was wondering: is there any technical reason to position the date at 3 o'clock? I mean obviously it's become a staple for Rolex. But it also seems to be the preferred emplacement in the rest of the industry. Is this due to a necessity or does it bear any technical advantages? Or is it purely stylistic preference.

Sorry if that's a stupid question, but I imagine there must be a reason beyond it just being so.

For most (but not all) watches it's purely a single disk, so they can put the window most anywhere, so it's a stylistic choice..

Purely personal preference, but if you have to have a date it should be at 3.

6 - I don't like, although I do have one with date at 6.
4 - is really odd - who thought that one up ?
12 - (Sorry Longines et al) just looks stupid.
Oris type pointer around the dial perimeter I can live with if it matches the overall style of the watch.
I prefer watches without date anyway, as I rarely wear the same watch for more than 2 days. Quick set date is not too bad, but in watches like Omega 8500's re-setting the date is a pain (but they are really good if you cross timezones as I did 4 times last week ).

YMMV.

We should be able to order a Rolex with the date position wherever we want it to be.

I don't know why we would want that but why not?

Yes.....

If it was at the 9:00 position the numbers would be upside down..
