Who has paid $25k for a Daytona and is NOT a flipper/dealer?

Just wondering who is buying Daytona's at grey market prices? Is it just the flippers/dealers who are propping up these prices? I'd love to be wrong here.. tell me if you've paid grey prices without any intention of selling your Daytona later for a profit.

.. maybe i'm just bitter

I think most here would jump on a Daytona at $25k. The current going rate is $30-35k

Don’t think you’ll find any sellers at 25k.

There's people here with multiple 100k plus watches. 25k would be a drop in the bucket.

$25K is nothing... and stainless steel Daytonas and Royal Oaks are a commoner’s watch in Beverly Hills, NYC, Miami, etc. You have to go iced to have something that stands out.

An example from Peter Marco...

I wouldn't say it's a commoners watch in NYC, but I would say, if you have $30k to spend on a daytona, chances are you're going to opt for an AP or a Patek instead.

A lot of people are bitter... people want what they can't have. Higher the price, the demand goes up as well. This is the case for luxury items. You gotta pay in order to play.

Fair enough. I meant... common among people who are into luxury watches.

I would just sit here quietly if I had. Those doing it know it's ridiculous as they wire the money.

I paid a small premium to get a watch recently but not freakin double list price.

Kinda want a full stickers black dial, was having a big debate with myself this week about putting up 35k for a 13k steel watch or buying a real nice solid gold day date 40 for a few grand more. Mind pushed me back to the Daytona every time but I just can’t pull the trigger at double list I just can’t do it.

there's no world where i would go with a steel daytona over a day date for the same price. those 2 watches shouldn't even be compared yet they're the same price now lol. insane

I paid $25k (£18k) for one in feb 2020. Now selling for $35k (£25k). Money would have only just sat in a bank account anyway.

You shouldn’t. Ultimately Rolex determined the sum of its parts and what its value in their catalog of watches. A $50 BigMac doesn’t make the meat prime rib. Rolex was already being considered “pricey” at where they set their msrp at. Anything above msrp of $13.5k, it’s a contest on who is the most desperate. I have owned the Daytona when it was a $7300.00 watch and it’s current variation hasn’t changed much at all.

Can’t imagine spending $25k or now +$30k for a $13k watch. All a matter of perspective since I acquired all my current Rolex collection prior to current prices.

Mystro, almost always providing excellent input, put this is a poor analogy, IMHO, and just poor reasoning

Nice pair! Which do you find you wear more often, the black or white dial? Which do you find more versatile?

The comparisons of daytona vs big mac are not founded because Rolex chronograph movement is considered by many to be the finest in the industry.

I’ve got a 911. If I sold it I could go grey and buy both the black and white Daytona. Does that sound nuts? Yeah, it does. No way. Looking at Speedmasters and El Primeros. Might get both and still get to enjoy my GTS.

Who has paid $25k for a Daytona and is NOT a flipper/dealer?

No wonder people would not admit to buying at grey prices here. Even on a public somewhat anonymous forum, people don’t enjoy getting bullied.

They’ll get jumped on by the too-clever-to-be-rich brigade who will then use the ‘absence of buyers’ to ‘prove’ that greys are in fact hovering up Daytona’s directly from ADs just to stockpile them.

Back to OP, I doubt many people buy at grey prices to speculate on price appreciation.

That would require a very elevated risk tolerance well and is probably more akin to gambling.

However, I think many do buy in the expectation that in a worst case scenario, they won’t lose too much. And as long as everyone buys that, it is likely to hold true.

It’s a good thing that Rolex is working to ensure that by keeping a lid on supply.

And by getting rid of the bad ADs that allow people to walk out with popular watches at msrp, and leaving only the major ones with the systems and processes in place to ensure sales only go to the best spenders.

Allow a customer to to buy something at 10k that they can sell straightaway for 20k? What kind of customers does such an AD hope to attract?

Certainly not the class Rolex wants going forward.

They have positioned themselves as a luxury brand, and I’m today’s world of ostentatious and widespread wealth, 25-30k is really not much luxury at all.

Ptfptfptf that's less than half a BTC @ $1 each. So for 50 cents, sure why not

Got one from AD tho, looks great on my wrist.

Unhappily paid 20k gray, but happily enjoyed the watch thereafter.
