Changing caseback..

Hi.

I have ordered a glass caseback for a daytona that i havent even recieved yet. Im thinking about asking my AD to change it when i am picking up the watch.

Whats the dangerous part about changing a caseback? I ordered the one that Larry (Tools) recommended here in a thread.

Does the guarantee disapear?

Martin

Well, you won't loose your warranty; however, Rolex will confiscate your clear caseback. So keep the old one and use that if you send in your Rolex for repair (warranty or not).

Looking forward to pics when you get your Daytona. Fitted with a glass (sapphire?) case back will look sweet.

Bear in mind though that the watch will then be a counterfeit!

Sorry, Bob. Couldn’t resist.

Confiscating something you own without due cause is theft, plain and simple. I cannot see how Rolex has the right to confiscate something you have legitimately purchased and therefore own.

I suppose they may refuse to fit the clear case back and they may refuse to honor the warranty but that's pretty much where it stops. Or at least in my country anyways!!

Sapphire looks amazing, but I've always wondered, does it affect water resistance?

There is no need to take it to a Rolex AD to swap the case back...any watch guy with a Rolex case tool can do it in about 3 minutes...

See if you can source a new case gasket and simply have the new one tightened correctly and pressure test the case.

Total time 10 minutes - total cost probably $25.

A Rolex AD will have all sorts of objections to this and it is your watch. Just be sure to swap it back before sending it in to Rolex for service or they will in fact steal your property and get away with it.

I'll never understand that.

The guy in Germany who makes one type says that his will meet the Rolex 300m standard for Subs. I don't see why they wouldn't. The crystal is sapphire after all.

Rolex will not confiscate a clear caseback.. As you say, it is the property of the owner. They will refuse to service it though, unless you agree to have a new correct back fitted..

Rolex does have the right, by law, to confiscate and destroy any trademark infringment (counterfeit) parts though... this could extend to dials, bracelets etc...if they have the Trademark on them.. not aftermarket parts without such trademarks.

Thanks for clearing that up Larry. I do understand the trademark infringement part and fully support this.
