50th Anniversary of the Submariner **DATE**
So haven't seen much hoopla about this, perhaps because it only affects the DATE model Submariner. However, it is the 50th anniversary of the legendary 1680 with the most iconic colored text ever used on a dial.
What do you guys think Rolex will do.... I am sure the movement update is a no brainer but anything special to mark the 50th for the iconic Submariner DATE? My bet is with the home runs Dufour has been hitting since taking over, I'm going out on a limb here and I usually don't like speculation but we've definitely heard the whispers and locker room talk....quickly followed by "it'll never happen"... I've already eaten my words twice and sat there with egg on my face...once regarding the SD4K and then again with the ss BLRO.... Both predictions came to pass. We worried when JFD took over but it's been nothing but winners since in my opinion. Is it possible? I think the red Submariner is coming.... |

The 50th anniversary Sea Dweller has one line of red text and a bigger case. Will a 50th anniversary sub also have a line of red text and a bigger case?

Doubt Rolex will do anything to sub other than potentially upgrade movement. The 116610 is a top seller. Unlikely Rolex will try to shift demand from one date sub to another.

With the Datejust now at 41mm, it would make sense to move the sports watches up to that size as well.

I used to say Rolex won't this or that and then the BLRO came out...the Sea-Dweller will never live again and the SD4K was born and then cancelled in three years.
Let's not forget the SD43, never would we see a cyclops on a Sea-Dweller and then the bombshell, it grew in size, it got a cyclops and then incredibly, red text. But "never" was an incredibly confident word uttered here... Now I'm not saying we have a strong enough case, I honestly don't expect it...but what I do know for sure is to not say "for sure it won't" and "never". Learned my lesson with that. Dufour has been full of surprises. I think something special is coming this year as well and although anniversaries are usually reserved for the model name (Submariner, Milgauss) versus the reference number(1680, 16610, 116500), I can't imagine Rolex would overlook a 50th year landmark. But we'll see. I just find this detail interesting. |

Since we're dreaming here, a case with classic lines would be great too.

If the Submariner moved up in size I honestly would be incredibly shocked. To me that would be a bad move. The Submariner is perfect at 40mm. The lugs could use some shaving, a matte dial and red text would leave us speechless. If true, Tudor hinted at a new watch without marker surrounds so it seems Rolex in general is aware of it's heritage and the SD43's red text also proves it. Two years ago I would have bet a paycheck to the contrary but today, Rolex is full of surprises and sales isn't the motivating force, Rolex will sell anything it releases at Basel. |

I know this is just total rumour but it has been widely speculated that a Sub Date similar to below is possibly due out this year at Baselworld 2019.
I for one would be at the front of the que for this beauty. cio.jpg |

I like this take on a new red Sub, with meters first dial and slimmer lugs.

I dont; think so. Given we had the 50th Anniversary of the Submariner in 2003 and we got the Submariner Date LV to celebrate.

I work in the fashion industry surrounded by creative people in their 20s and 30s and most prefer 40mm or smaller. Lot of Explorers, OPs and 36mm DJs around....many scoff at the size of my SubC. |

Another unattainable option... just can’t decide which one I won’t be able to get.

I don’t like the red text. Rolex is putting it on everything. Give me slimmer lugs, chamfers, new movement and make it 124060.

Would love to see Rolex shock everyone with a smaller sub. Still “40mm” but measuring 39mm, yet maintaining the maxi dial

I bet you nothing will change. Rolex wants to keep the thicker lugs as a Submariner hallmark as compared to the GMT.

The square lugs were in response to the big watch craze... that has subsided. Trimmer lugs and red lettering with the new movement is easily a possibility even in rolex slow moving reluctance to change. We have seen an adjustment with the discontinued sea dweller and the looking at the GMT there is not an appreciable difference.
