Gem Set Submariner Question.

Hey guys hoping to pick your brain on this one please.

A friend of mine has an opportunity to purchase this at an AD.

He has been told that the watch is ultra rare and there were only very few that are made every year.

It is white gold sapphires and diamonds.

What might you think is a good price for this?

Do you think this is a good watch to hold?

Personally a Submariner with gems in it is not my cup of tea at all. I wear a TT sub. However I am trying to help my friend here to make a decision. He does like the watch. Hoping to see what you guys might say.

Thank you!

If he likes it then he should get it.

I’ve got a gem set GMT and whilst the talk of “rarity” was used also, wasn’t the reason for me buying it.

I’ve normally steered away from gem set watches (like DJ) but with these I guess it’s a little different as the watches are that little more exclusive.

If you want to play Hollywood it’s one of the more tasteful ways to do so.

Not my style so, no. If it's your friends style then maybe, yes, for him.

If he likes it, and can afford it without putting the mortgage at risk, why not!!

I do think that these factory gem set pieces are rarer than a SS Daytona, but I wouldn’t know if it is a good investment that he should “buy and hold”

I’ve seen a few auctions from Phillips, and I’ve seen 16610lvs and Patek 5711s sell for a premium, but I personally haven’t seen one of these gem set watches sell yet

Which to me is kind of odd

So idk if they sell for a premium or not

But who knows!

Have to agree myself would not wear it if given to me free, and with most all of these types of watches if paid retail will loose quite a bit as soon as you leave the ADs store .

Guys lets be honest here to his question - "Do you think this is a good watch to hold?" Absolutely NOT !! No No No
And it's got the wrong dial for a white gold Sub too so it's probably a fake.

It’s a cool piece if you’re into gem-set Rolex. I think user archer1021 on this forum has one. So tell your friend to go for it if he loves that look but I don’t think it will be a piece that will hold value particularly well.

This piece goes for a Premium, so how is this not a good buy & hold piece if he's getting it for MSRP?

That watch is not White Gold, and the gems are fakes.

No, it isn't a watch to have, nor it is likely available at an AD.

This is a piece available at an ad with box and papers. Just FYI.

I actually like it. And I have heard that many of these blinged out watches actually go UP in value. Rainbow Daytona for example.

Out of curiosity, what are you basing this statement on? You sound pretty confident.....

The dial does not look like a "smurf" dial. But I cant tell if the gems are fake from the pic. How can you tell?

That’s what I would think, but who knows?

I’m assuming 50 years from now, there will be 15 at an auction, and MAYBE one of these gem set watches

Right?

This watch is definitely real and definitely factory. If he likes it and has the means I would buy it in a heartbeat.

This reference doesn't have the same dial as the "smurf" it has a sunburst dial.

The 116659 SABR mock on a SS is all over e-bay, not to mention the rep market.

The OP has a story about a friend with a "deal" on a $110,000 watch and asks what a "good price" would be, with a picture on a standard box cuff.

But you're right... perhaps I am too skeptical... maybe not so much the watch, but the story.

Factory set gems would be the key as far as value goes. There are real Daytonas with NON factory gems to make it look like a Rainbow that have prob less value than a basic Daytona whereas the real Rainbow is priced wayyy above MSRP

If he's buying from one of the ADs that don't play by the rules, this watch may not be going for the MSRP, hence he's asking what's a "fair" price to pay if that means above MSRP.

The stickers are on the watch too. Don't see many reps or aftermarkets with that on

If it's a real 116659 SABR then the problem is what to pay for it. I have never seen a published MSRP, and this doesn't appear in the main catalog. There is a second catalog with these Gem Set pieces. It's definitely rare, but I don't know how rare. 50 pieces, 500 pieces, 1000 pieces? If I had the money to spend, I would wear this.
