Today, at the gym, I noticed a man wearing a t-shirt with a clear plastic pocket applied to the chest. Inside the pocket was a crisp, new one hundred dollar bill.

An ingenious fellow and a true American. He has found a way to express his hard-earned success and social status, not to mention his moral superiority, without wasting a lot of time buying a Mercedes-Benz or a house in Beverly Hills. In essence, he has skipped the "bling" altogether and gotten right to the point.

I am reminded that, in _Easy Rider_, Jack Nicholson says, "This used to be a hell of a good country," and, later in the film, Peter Fonda says, "We blew it."

I have been in Calgary a few times and Toronto many times....I have no problems up there....crime and shooting are very low compared to the states.
IBM offered to move me to Toronto in 05 and my wife said no because of the cold and family is in Mexico but I would have moved there in a second.

I've never been to Toronto, there has never been any inclination to go to a place so similar to Calgary (Big, important city

) Were there any noticeable differences?

The biggest diff is so many other races (non canadian) India, Pakistan, mid-eastern
large China town too.. Toronto is big melting pot....
Calgary was more Western....with the 11 ave bar seen etc...

Here in my hometown we've had some problems with muggings by what is usually labelled as immigrants but I'm sure a few hometown kids are gettin in on the action.

Anyway, a police officer recently came into our office whilst doing the rounds and told us to always keep a ten pound note on our person. If we ever left the office after dark and were approached, we had to ensure the money is loose, preferably in a shirt top pocket. We were told to say "I've left my wallet in the office but I took some cash out to pick up some groceries", "Come on buddy my wife will go crazy" etc.
This way, we have been informed, is the best way to prevent being stabbed. By letting them take a little loose cash, we escape with our lives and our identities (id theft is massive) which saves us and saves the local police some major headaches.

Sod the ten quid, my LV has now been retired to the safe for a while.

Sometimes, you have to ask yourself; "where did it all start to go wrong?"

First of all, I will not resign to being a victim... That was what it sounded like to me in the final portion of his statement. I am not too certain of the laws in the UK but, I would hope you are "allowed" to defend yourself and / or take means to have non lethal weapons ( I may be wrong, I hope Im not ) with you ie; pepper spray, mace, or for that matter even a cell phone, ETC... It is without a doubt, sad that the police are recommending that you carry a10 pound note on you to appease the thieves? Especially when there are cameras on EVERY corner...??? If they get 10 from you this time what may you have the next time, 20, 50, ???? When would it stop....????

My philosophy is to not be an obvious OR easy target, be aware of your surrounds and be willing AND able to defend yourself if necessary!!! Especially if you have a family and or kids...

That is the begining of what I would do.

I aint too happy about it Hy but I'd rather lose a tenner than get a blade in my liver or heart.

Knife crime is crazy in the UK right now and as normal law abiding citizens, there is nothing we can do. It is an offence in the UK to carry anything that may be construed as a weapon. Try walking down the street with a cricket bat or golf club past 8o' clock and you'd see.

If I was feeling up for a fight and took it to the muggers, there is every chance that I would be chardeg with affray or abh and my fine (or the compensation) I'd have to pay to the 'victim' would be well over the £10 I'd lose by just giving in.

My collegue's friend is now facing 18 months in prison because he fought 6 drunken teenagers who were beating up a girl behind the counter of a local fast food restaurant (she was hospitalised). One guy against six and he gave them all such a good hiding they pressed charges and he takes the full rap.

It is a sad, sorry world and it isn't fair but I have a wife and a kid. If somebody needs ten pound so badly they would kill for it...they they are welcome to mine!

That's horrible... I've been to London 3 times ( total of 2 weeks ) and Coatbridge, Edinburgh, and Glasgow Scotland for a total of 9 days... I have always felt safe. Obviously I was not in the "hood" or outside of the tourist areas ( I think... ) so I never ran into a problem.

I can't fathom the idea of defending yourself ( or trying to help that innocent woman from being attacked ) and then being brought up on charges????

I guess my serious question is, Why has this been allowed to hapen in the U.K. ???

Is the U.S. next???
