I gather it's also a very common gift for special occasions like weddings or certain milestones. My parents received a pair of his/hers YG Rolexes back in the early 80s as a wedding gift from relatives, and they made very little money back in those days.

A couple of my relatives in white-collar careers in HK have told me Rolex is basically a baseline watch in their office - everyone owns at least one, and many people have more than enough to wear a different one every day of the week. The real ballers all wear AP, Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, etc.
Just got off the Hong Kong Airport express and couldn’t help but notice the trolley collectors and sweepers wearing vintage DJ gold Rolex on their wrist. Yes, rolex is a statement for many here but at the same time rolex prices didn’t skyrocket to where it is now as compare to when these peope bought it. Two most common rolexes I see (having lived in Hong Kong and currently on vacation now there) is submariners and Daytona’s. Lots of females wear Daytona’s. Try to check out the MTR (transit Train side) during the morning and evening and you will see a lot more.

Agree with you! I've had a few conversations with fellow collectors on the tube!

One of them was even kind enough to lend me his Daytona for a few days. We had obviously become friends by this point.

PGA Tour events. I've been to several and always see various Rolexes in the crowds along with an occasional AP

Also, 24 months interest free credit is easy to get.

Cheers guys and makes sense. I see this in London too with cars, as with such high house prices many twenty and thirty year olds are still living at home and are buying nice cars with their disposable mortgage-less incomes instead of putting deposits down on properties.

Someone else was telling me that around the Asian Financial Crisis and HK handover, a lot of people bought Rolex watches because they had a stable value in foreign currency, and gold was selling at a major premium to spot... This was a middle class HK local who said she has 3 or 4 Rolex in the safe at home. I've never seen her wear one.

Meanwhile, the upper class HK locals moved financial assets offshore and obtained foreign passports. I never see these people wearing Rolex, except maybe a Daytona when they're at home. They actually make fun of my Rolex fandom, but I refuse to join their reverse snobbery

So you have a wide range in HK: the masses who save up to buy one as a status symbol, the educated middle class who see it as a form of currency, and the uber-rich who consider themselves above the vulgarity of Rolex

I see more Rolexes on planes than anywhere else. Saw another guy on the plane this morning in Savannah with the same 16570 that I was wearing.

Hong Kong has to have the among the highest concentration of a Rolex on wrist in the world. When I visit, I see everyone from business people to taxi drivers and servers wearing a Rolex. There may be some fakes among the ones I spot but I suspect they are mostly the real deal. Singapore is a close 2nd.
