SubC Square Lugs - Initially a Drawback... but now, a Positive?
I've been contemplating buying one for awhile. When I was initially doing research on this piece, I was completely turned off by the square lugs. However, after trying it on at my local AD and seeing it on countless threads, I have slowly warmed up to them and have even come to like them. Has anyone else experienced this situation?

I liked the chunky lugs right away. The sub c was the first sub I tried on though so I didn't have anything to compare it to at the time.

IDK, I still dislike them. The shape of the classic 40mm sub case will still be sought after 100 years from now. When the explorer II came out I thought I'd snap one up, after trying it on I was like no way...

Tried to like them, ended up selling the SubC and sticking with the old classic shape

Wore an old style 16613 Bluesy for 17 years then bought a new Hulk this past April. I in fact like both old and new style. In fact on the Hulk everything is bigger sans the 40mm. The lugs and crown guards and wider, the bezel is higher and the actual height of the case is approximately 2mm or so higher than my 16613. Once you have the new style on your wrist and stop dwelling on pictures, they actually have a nice look and feel and definitely more wrist presence. My 16613 now seems SMALL

my perspective is that the protruding square lugs don't appear that great in pictures (shots of the watch by itself) but once it's on the wrist, the appearance of the lugs are well integrated with the bracelet and project a balanced piece.

Seems common when Rolex changes something, the masses dislike it then warm up to it over time. I noticed it most recently with the new DSSD dial.
The 114060 looks fine. But to be fair, I never disliked it. |

It's a perfect watch. Remove the date and you have another perfect watch. Both awesome.

I have liked the wider, square lugs since the beginning. I think it was an excellent way for Rolex to increase wrist presence, while staying true to the classic 40mm size. No complaints here at all!

Initially, I was put off by them...until I tried one on and found it to be a non-issue whatsoever. Really not bad on the wrist.
Disclaimer: do not own one, but did have the same positive reaction once I tried it on. |

Well said. I was certainly unsure to sart with, but have completely warmed to the lugs. The new bracelet and clasp pretty well wrap it up for me.

Wrist Presence is not something that interests me, so I prefer the original.

Love the current Submariner case shape. I think of it as a manly oyster case.
I do also like the older curvier oyster cases, but elected to go with the current model because of the ceramic bezel and the significant bracelet and clasp upgrades. These improvements make the current Submariner SEXY! I can't for the life of me upload pics in the correct orientation |

It's a better dive watch, and that's why it's a larger, heavier watch while still being 40mm. I think they cared more about this than "wrist presence." These aren't fashion watches; they're sport watches that are also designed with style in mind. But function and quality come first.

I liked the square lugs from the start. This was confirmed when I purchased my BLNR this year as that was the first watch I own that has the square lugs. Love them now.

I love the thicker lugs. The Sub-C looks beautiful on the wrist. I like everything Rolex did with the new Sub.

New maxi case doesn't look the best in pictures, but in-person and on-the-wrist, I think they look terrific. I did not like the maxi case initially, but had a change of heart once I saw the new cases in person.

Initially complaints on the lugs didn't bother me, went with sub c. After a while it wore me down a bit, wearing 16610 more .

I've like the design from the start and for me it makes the Sub very comfortable.

I totally dig the wider lugs. It wears much bigger than the older style and looks cool, IMHO. I bought a new SubC Date earlier this year, and I still like the look.

Not to disrespect the older models, and I guess its just a personal preference, but the older ones look somewhat wimpy. These are beefy and substantial which is what they should be IMO

I think whenever you introduce change, it is inevitable that some embrace it and some will stick to what they're comfortable with. Nothing wrong with either, just personal preference. And I certainly agree that there is an onslaught of naysayers at the moment a change is introduced who change their minds over time. Amazing.
I myself...meh, it doesn't really make much difference. Much ado about nothing really. I like the newer models because of the maxi dial with better lume. Bracelet and clasps that allow for a more adjustable fit...these things are important to me because I can actually see the time and enjoy the comfort of a well fitting watch. The lugs, they're pure aesthetics, and I always go function over form. |

Yep, I resisted for the longest time and refused to let myself like the new case...I'm a convert now having had my 114060 for the past 6 months. The thing is brilliant, just the right size and proportions to give the sub a new and modern look.
