I was once at a corporate dinner and I was wearing the cheapest watch at the table... a Patek 5711. There's always someone with more so don't let it bother you.

Sound advice. I was at the Tyson's Corner Beer, Bourbon and BBQ festival yesterday. Most common wrist watch was the Sub of some variation. I saw everything from Sub to the WG Sub with Blue Ceramic Dial and one GMT Pepsi (dated '68' according to the owner). But I didn't notice ONE Sea Dweller. So needless to say, I had the coolest Rolex at the festival AND kicked ass at corn hole!!!

I had four guys in my office a week ago and all four had gold or platinum Rolex on their wrist. I couldn't help but notice a couple of them checking mine out which would be much less expensive, it to me more desirable. Be happy with what you wear. It only matters to you.

For a time when I owned (among others) a Patek Philippe Nautilus, I frequently found greater joy wearing my vintage 1963 Air King.
I admit there was a time I would envy the great number of Presidents at the country club when "all I had" was an Omega Broad Arrow. No one else gave a sh!t but one guy, who was a complete tool. Now I'm comfortable with my non-President, and I can appreciate ANY watch whose wearer shows passion for watches and strikes up a conversation. |

You can walk into even the most notoriously snooty AD with the least expensive Rolex on your wrist and you'll still get treated like your a member of the club.

Avoid the parking lot with them after the event so you don't have suicidal thoughts.

As stated, cheap and Rolex don't go together. Wear what you like! I had a gold/stainless blue Sub, ended up trading out for a DJII and recently added a GMTII BLNR. Maybe next is something all gold. Just wear what you like.

Ditto. For what it's worth, out of all those I know personally who can afford solid gold Rolex watches (15-20 people), only 2 wear solid gold and the rest wear stainless steel. I highly doubt any enthusiast who has an expensive president looks at a SS wearer and thinks "guess they can't afford what I have". It's all preference :) |

Cheapest Rolex in the room!
Nor can I say I have ever measured the worth of a Man/Woman by their Rolex or any watch for that matter. They are watches, just look at them and enjoy them for their beauty!

Watches are a hobby and a passion for many of us - a great, entertaining, interesting and expensive one at that. They don't define anything but time.

Let's just say men like to compare themselves with others by their jobs, income, cars, watches, zip code, country club membership, etc, whereas women compare themselves with others based on their looks, clothes, handbag, jewelry, kids, etc.
Many people feel self-conscious when in a room with others with whom they would not normally associate with in their daily lives. However once you are officially "a club member", then I think people worry less about "toys" and more about the substance of the person you are having a conversation with. I use the term "toys" as all-inclusive for things you don't need, but are nice to have and you enjoy. Of course a Rolex watch falls into this category and as long as you wear it for your personal enjoyment and not use it as an entrance to a "club" you want to join, then I don't think it matters how expensive or blingy your Rolex is. |
