Have owned 5196 and 5296 in the past and quickly fell out of love. VC and Lange get the nod from me in that range.

That said, DJ 36 would be bottom of that particular list.

Good to know. In your opinion, do you think you need to have purchase history with the AD in Vancouver to be able to get a watch coming in?

Quite honestly, they didn’t seem too excited or interested in adding my name to a “list” when I asked (and I can understand that if they are looking for prior purchase history).

5196 all the way. It is THE dress watch. Timeless, eloquent, and a Patek to boot.

Sure, the 5196 is from 2004, the 5296 and 5711 were from 2006 and they’re both discontinued. Eventually they all get discontinued.

The new Calatrava‘s have been bigger like the 5227, 5212, that NY Pilot.
So I think it will be replaced but bigger.

I always thought that 37mm would be too small but it’s got such a slim bezel, it’s almost all dial.

OP, I hope you find one!

I love the look of the VC. That would be my vote.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I’ve narrowed it down to the VC or the 5196. Now...the hunt is on!!!

My vote goes for the VC traditionelle or Lange for a simple dress watch. If resale value and generate stronger relationship with your Rolex AD bothers you, I will go for Patek!

You should definitely try them on before deciding.

On my 6.6 inch wrists 5196 (and 5296) felt a lot larger than expected with their narrow bezels and large empty dials (and uninspiring as well, especially the 5296). I also disliked the thought that the 5196 is just an upsized 3796/5096 with the same tiny movement. A replacement shouldn't be far off.

If you can live with the size of the VC I'd rather pick that or a Lange with the VC the less classic and more contemporary choice.

Both the Traditionelle and 5196 are superb. DJ is not a dress watch. Cellini is.

My preference would be 5196, vc traditionelle, and then date just.
Patek rose gold and brown strap with that design is such understated and refined beauty.
