Every time I see a Hodinkee special (that hideous Speedie aside), I always wonder why the brands don't just make these as part of the regular line. I mean, they're hardly groundbreaking, but they do generally scratch a (very clearly defined) itch...

The regular silver 160th Carrera is still available. Same watch but cheaper than the Hodinkee edition.

TAG Heuer can hardly be accused of a lack of imagination and creativity given the hundreds of new models they seem to pump out on a regular basis. Whilst not my style, I'm sure they sell a ton too - the reissues are a drop in the ocean in comparison.

Point taken. Kudos for the new models! But quite clearly in recent years the number and variation of 1960s-70s re-issues has been proliferate.

Love the esthetic...agree with others about the thickness. They need to start a separate line (or even brand) that focuses on vintage-inspired designs like this but not in "limited" quantities. Vintage Heuer is just cool.

I have a problem with date at 9 and I am not a date window hater often seen in comments section of another blog. It just does not seem right... the rest of the watch looks clean.

After Hodinkee's teaser, my guess was that this was going to be just like the 160 Years Silver Limited Edition but with a black dial, white lume, and possibly silver or white subdials. Personally, I would have liked that much better than this but that may be coming down the pike from TAG Heuer as a regular release later on. In a lot of ways, this Hodinkee release is a more unique watch than that would have been, even if it is personally not for me. (A single register chronograph with a date and no running seconds is not something I'd ever want and so I did not purchase one.) However, I think they should have kept the silver or white chapter ring of the original instead of the black.
Considering the 250 production number and the $7,250 price, I'm a little surprised it sold out in just a few minutes but when it did, I was equallly surprised it lasted so long (another five hours) on TAG's website. Perhaps most of the Hodinkee acolytes did not know about it being on TAG's website until much later? As far as resale goes, this is in no way as unique as the Skipper and its production is double the number, so I don't really see this actually selling too much above retail, even though this is a more versatile watch and does have a much better movement. The first ones were listed on ebay for $10k today but I suspect that will go down a little shortly. As for the watch's thickness, I have the 160 Years Silver Limited Edition and while it is thicker than I would like, it's not too bad and a lot of the height is the crystal. |

Does anyone know how this 14.7mm height compares with other limited editions? E.g. like Rake Blue Dreamer or the OG Hodinkee Skipper? Seems very thick...

What you have to remember about the 14.7mm is that it includes the glassbox crystal. This does not wear thick at all. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk |

The proportions are wrong in that the beauty of the Carrera lies largely in the overall relationship between the dial and long lugs. Here blowing up the size of the main case ruins that elegance.

It seems like pieces purchased thru Hodinkee have already landed, but pieces purchased thru Tag don't ship until 5th of March. Is anyone else hearing/knowing the same?

Mine landed yesterday. Ordered from HODINKEE. Not too thick at all. Wears like the Skyflake in my opinion.
The dial is much better in the metal, impossibly deep black. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It’s very nice for sure, and I’d be an owner yesterday at $3 - $4k.
I do however feel better about this thread. https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=787573 |

Very nice matt black dial, complemented well by the shiny markers and hands
Doesn't wear thick as I first feared due to its down sloping lugs The sapphire is also awesome in terms of AR. Almost like my sinn. Too bad I'm too new to post pics Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |

Got mine.
It really is a sensational watch. It’s much more versatile than the Skipper, and the movement represents a definite step up. 100m water resistance, 30 min chrono, date, suitable to wear on any occasion, and only 250 to boot. It’s one of the Dinks/Heuer best efforts. By far. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
