Question for the Photography Crowd

I am looking for a higher end, compact "street camera". I have narrowed my choices to the Ricoh GRIII and the Fujifilm X100V, leaning toward the Fujifilm.
Also looked at Sony products. I am NOT dropping 5-6k on a Leica Q2.

I know both are fixed lens cameras. I have in the past owned cameras with interchangeable lenses which were, frankly, a pain to lug around. I don't want to go that route. What might you folks suggest?

I shoot still shots, no interest in video. Strictly for fun. I hear amazing things about the X100V but it does not have image stabilization. Does that really matter?

Your thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Read Ken Rockwells reviews.

My opinion, the Fuji has an f2 lens, if you can set ISO to auto...you don't need stabilisation.

X100V, hands down.

I've posted a few threads here in the past year using the camera. Had the X100S for about 5 years before moving onto this one...will always have some form of the X100 with me for as long as they make them.

The Fuji is a technically superior camera, and will be easier for a casual user to generate beautiful images with. I've owned a Ricoh in the past, the GXR, which allowed the use of Leica and Zeiss rangefinder lenses to natively mount without an adapter, and specifically optimized for their use.

You need to hold a Ricoh before you make the decision, as it's really designed around street photography. Excellent lens, completely operable with one hand with ergonomic perfection, and very unobtrusive. It's meant to be held at one's side, anticipating the decisive moment, and brought to the eye at that moment for the capture. The settings are designed around this. For example, you can set a fixed focal distance like you would on a Leica rangefinder lens. In this way there is no lag when you frame and take the shot, it takes it right away. With most other autofocus cameras, there will be some imperceptible delay, but for street work this is detrimental.

With the Ricoh you can actually hold it comfortably in a pocket. With the more advanced Fuji you'd need a little shoulder bag or to carry it on a neck strap.

If you want a general camera, I'd go with the Fuji. Better lens, better in-camera processing of images so you don't need to work on them as much on a computer, built-in electronic viewfinder and LCD. If you want a more purpose built camera that just gets out of the way, the Ricoh. The best camera is the one you have with you.

I owned an earlier version of the Fuji prior to being stolen - it was simply awesome. Here is one of my pics from that camera - a 1940's rusted out Buick:

I would pick the GR III but I tend to go against the grain with cameras (I know most will recommend the Fugi, meh). My main digital for a while has been the Sigma DP Merrill (point and shoot). As old as it is, it still gives me image quality that rivals many of the current cameras. It's that Foveon sensor.

That being said, it's has its quirks that make it not everybody's choice.

I've actually been seriously thinking about picking up a GR for a compact street shooting camera. It seems to excel at that in capable hands.

Your posts of your travel pics have inspired me to purchase a high end camera and has me leaning toward the Fujifilm X100V.

Do you use a clear filter with adapter as I understand the X100V is waterproof except for the actual lens?

Only if you shoot fast moving subjects (sports or kids)

I would go for Fuji.

Appreciate that! I did use a clear filter on my X100S but since getting the V, I've been using the wide conversion lens, which I keep on the camera full-time and highly recommend. It's not a need by any means, but it is a very nice to have when traveling.

IS or VR is generally for shooting in lower light at lower shutter speeds not for fast moving subjects.

X100V hands down. Forget the Ricoh.

I had the X100S and now the X100T. Both are fantastic cameras.

Agreed - Ken Rockwell rates the FujiFilm cameras VERY highly, and so do I.

If you don’t want to go to a Q2 I’d suggest looking for a nice pre owned Q1... you’ll be amazed at the quality of the lens. The Q1 will also hold its value for the long term as its getting a wide cult following. I’m an M and SL shooter but had a Q1 for a few years.

I've never tried the Q, but I have the X1 and X2 and love the image quality from those. I'm sure the Q is a step above even.

I am an M film shooter though.

Great choice going for the Fuji x100v. Just a shout out to the Leica D-Lux Type 109. I know, it’s really a re-badged Panasonic but it’s well-built, made in Japan and has a really versatile 24-75mm lens (150mm digital). I basically sold all my SLR kit and this is a joy to just take on trips. I don’t know if it’s been updated or discontinued but well worth it if you see one.

The Leica Q and Q2 can’t be beat.

Don’t ignore the Q because it’s not the latest.

You can pick up a minty one for $2900 or less.

I’ve won awards with the Q.

It’s a phenomenal camera.

The Fuji X100 is also fantastic but it won’t patch the itch.

X100V is amazing, I had the F before that (still do). Fujifil is making the best optics right now and the pictures that come out of their camera have a lot of soul.
