McLaren Financial Situation & Parallels to the Swiss Watch Industry

Had this video pop up in my recommended and gave it a watch over breakfast.

No earth shattering revelations hidden in here for any of us, but definitely interesting to think you could simply replace the names of any of the exotic manufacturers named above with some of our favorite Swiss brands.

Saw something on McLaren this morning in one of my deal pipeline newsletters.

Negotiations are getting very tense with its bondholders. JPM is allegedly working withe the company on trying to raise at least 250M GBP.

More on that story here

Nice video! Thanks for that i know nothing about cars but that was a cool primer on how things work. I guess Ferrari is like the Rolex AP Patek, and Mclaren is your typical Eichemont/Swatch.

He makes some great points in the video about the brand. Some valid points were also mentioned in a few of those comments. It's always interesting to observe as companies try navigate their way out of such circumstances. Thanks for sharing

When I first saw the Urus I thought the thing looked like a kid’s toy car. After seeing them more and more in-person it has definitely grown on me a lot. I see more on the road than you might think (work in Beverly Hills). Can’t say that’s the car I would actually buy if it that was my budget; it’s one of those I just appreciate seeing on the road.

On a related note of expanding into the SUV market, Aston Martin is another high-end performance OEM that is currently going through a ton of challenges right now. Their IPO ended up being a disaster due to declining financial performance after an abbreviated period of amazing growth. They are relying a lot on the success of the DBX (their entrant into the SUV market). I thought that car was generally underwhelming in terms of looks and design when AML first revealed it. Not a bad looking car, but also nothing revolutionary in terms of design that distinguishes it from the rest of the pack of cars in the high performance SUV class.

Blows my mind how people don't mind paying that type of coin for a VW touareg chassis? I think SUV buyers are a different breed.

The Maserati looks like an old Infinti FX
The Lambo like a micro machine
The RR like a disproportioned box on wheels
The Bentley imho is the only one that has some design class in that category

AM has a submarine project and apartment complex!? Wtf are they doing? That’s like Patek deciding they want to go into luxury fashion of bespoke suits and shoes.

With the market increasingly dominated by electronics-laden SUV automatics, thank Dog there are plenty of older second-hand manual sedans still around that will see me out.

Well AM just got a huge injection of cash from Lawrence Stroll so they should be ok atleast in the short term. I’m guessing they will be fine. I know McLaren is still looking for $$$ but I’m sure they will find a solution as well.

Stroll's cash has bought Aston about a year. If the DBX does well they will be Ok, if not my guess is he will take Aston through an eighth bankruptcy. On McLaren, its really a stare down between the shareholders and bondholders on who is going to cough up cash or take a haircut. Deal will get done but it is ugly.

I recently posted another update on Aston Martin on karenable. They have just announced another apartment deal, this time in NYC.

The Bentley from behind the front seats is an Audi Q7. Check it out, even down to the door pulls.

Bentley... oh hell no / hard pass after owning two of them.

I heard there is zero real Lambo bits in their SUV.

Barnum was right.
