Ibtl

IBTL, why do people do that? It provides absolutely nothing to the discussion and more often than not, gets the thread locked.

You think it's bad here, you should see it on the Psychic Forum.

Interesting.

I was thinking about starting a similar thread.

It’s a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy really. Pointless, and is often what actually derails the conversation.

Personally, I think it’s a form of anger and aggression presenting itself in a passive manner.

Wow. That’s well said.

ibtl creates a subscription to the thread, so it’s easy to follow. When I do that, I’ve signed up to receive updates on the thread simply by replying to the thread. It’s a signup mechanism.

In my mind, the type of thread that warrants ibtl from me usually amounts a thread with a connotation “hey you guys; watch this!” or some topic which will generate noteworthy, emotional replies. It’s like signing up to watch a train wreck. We know it’s coming. Might as well get some entertainment value. And if Padi chimes in, it’s 2X the fun. Love that guy (and all the mods who manage the general public).

it's a passive aggressive 'I told you so' regarding controversial topics. I think they are pointless too.

I agree with many of the posts above plus it just comes across as juvenile.

It’s just a forum thing. The equivalent of posting “first!” In the comments section.

Typically it’s always true. I don’t believe it has much to do with actually being locked it’s just obvious if you know the forum rules when it’s been overstepped.

If it comes across that way, I will just click the bookmark up top and subscribe to the thread rather than posting in it. Interesting perspective. I would not have thought about that.

Ps. I had to look up passive aggressive.

As per usual I agree with you guys. Looked at both sides of the discussion, and what you say has validity.

I think tho, there is a chronic use of the “ibtl” by certain people. It’s used often and often with no justification.

Whereas, there are certainly occasions for it, it becomes moot and unwelcome when it adds unnecessary inaccurate bit of color and distraction to an otherwise healthy discussion.

Just my thoughts.

I'm of the opinion that if a thread needs locking, the mods do a good job and don't need a reminder, it seems though, that often, "ibtl" nudges the thread into the area of being locked. If someone thinks that the thing needs to be locked, just use the "report button" or don't bother commenting, what on earth does 4 letters bring to the discussion?

I've only reported one post in almost eight years here but it was a direct offense to me and the guy ended up banned. Reporting posts feels like I'm doing something behind the person's back. If I have something to say I say here in front of everybody. I've used IBTL before and will keep using regardless of what others think. Works for me. Cheers.

Along with “lol” - It’s an acronym I tend not to favour.

Usually it’s a bit generic and doesn’t add to the discussion

Sometimes though it does show the posters true feelings when it’s used totally without warrant on certain threads.

Haha, I love it!

When I was a mod over at Sony Playstation forums, kids would do it all the time (posting IBTL) just to rack up their post counts since we have different level for each post counts. Also not to mention that, other member would look up to some of the members with a lot of post counts (kids, go figure lol). These days I think people posting IBTL just for the sake of posting since they have nothing meaningful to add.

Oh and IBTL.

It’s pointless

Same as something like say - tell me your favourite cigar brand
Usual suspects come out the woodwork saying smokings bad, disgusting etc.
If nothing constructive/ relevant - move on

The report button was getting so overused lately that a new rule was added to the list not long ago. People were using it for all kinds of petty things, rather than its intended use as a kind of "emergency" call. It got kind of annoying to see a bunch of emails every morning with several unnecessarily reported posts that had to be gone through one by one

9. The report button is only to be used for reporting abusive, insulting or troll posts, guns, politics or scams, and is not for reporting posts that you disagree with, content that you don’t like, or other pet peeves. In other words, mods are not on call to tailor forum content to your liking via the report button. Repeated overuse of the report button may earn infraction points.

I once started a thread that said: “IBTL” So I could finally get a post in.... before the lock. Then I asked the Mods to lock the thread.

They responded they wouldn’t lock it, but the “ban” button was being looked at

Just my thoughts.

I definitely agree except TRF has relatively strict rules by forum standards. This place is the equivalent of an uptight country club and numerous topics which are interesting to me get locked left and right.

Not my forum. Not my rules. The only way I haven’t been banned so far is that I know them and stay within them.

When I post ibtl I don’t go ahead and report the post. I only report fakes, scammers and the very rare post which is just obscene. When it comes to standard over stepping, snitching isn’t something I take interest in.
