Tough choice.. I have both and the new Subc makes the most sense for a one and only piece but the 16710 is just a fun piece to own. If I had to let one go it would be by bye Sub

Too late to count in the vote tally you've already done, but post-poll seems to continue to favor grabbing the Sub, and that would be my vote as well due to its versatile and classic nature.

I’d go for the 16710 with the LN insert, or even go for a 116710 LN.

A way more versatile watch than the sub, more useful complications and without the overly square looking case. I’ve been wearing LN’s for years now.

Another vote for the sub! Since it is your first, one and only, get something brand new to start your own history with. Can always get a 5 digit later if you get the collecting bug. Plus the 114060 comes with full set.

If the condition of the GMT is really nice then even without papers, a service will guarantee authenticity and you'll have a great GMT. They aren't being made any more so there is value there. 114060 can be found pretty easily new so I find it having less allure.

Based on the OP's post of details on the watch he is interested in it would be the Submariner-C ND. New with box, papers and warranty. The Glide lock clasp is almost enough to justify the purchase but the no nonsense design of the Submariner also helps. If you buy the GMT and have to get a service then you are adding $800-1500 depending on what needs to be done. The OP seems like a very straight forward buyer and while none of us know what will happen service wise with our watches, NIB works better. I would get the Submariner-C ND and get on with the ownership experience.

This is a hard choice! I got the sub 114060 3 months ago and ended up adding 16710 Pepsi to my collection last week. The Pepsi did not come with box and paper though it has been verified by reputable watch service center in my country. The reason why I did what I did is because there are huge difference between watch only and box & paper price. Big enough I could send it to get service it deserves from Rolex and by doing so I would end up with paper after all (plus a serviced watch that would last for a good period of time).
I have to admit that it may come to your personal preference choosing between the two. The bracelet on the modern day Sub is definitely second to none. It is great improvement from pre-ceramic version of Submariner or GMT. The black dial on the Sub makes it all round watch for every occasions as well.
That being said one has to ask why still getting 16170 after owning a Sub? For me I think GMT especially the pre ceramic one is a fun watch. It's also versatile and and bazel can be replaced with coke or all black as well as the bracelet. I like the idea of mix and match here. It allows me to have up to 6 combinations within one watch, not to mention the brighter basel color. I mean who wouldn't love that. So I guess it is entirely up to you in the end which one you would go for. The best all round, do it all watch then go for the Sub. The fun and more functional watch then GMT is your pick. You really cant go wrong with either!
