Submariner 5513 from 1974 - please advise...

Hello All,

Newbie here, both to the forum and the awesome world of vintage Subs. I just received a (seemingly) beautiful Submariner ref. 5513 circa 1974 as a gift from my in-laws and I was hoping to get your sagacious opinion(s) on it. To my still-untrained eye things look pretty good and I've taken it to two different reputable vintage dealers and they too say it looks fine. The only thing one of them mentioned is that the bezel insert seems questionable, that he was uncertain if the 5513 from this era originally had a fat font bezel. Also I am aware that the bracelet is not the original folding clasp style, and I am totally fine with that. I'm just wondering if you notice anything else I should be concerned about because I am totally ready to enjoy this piece for a long long time...

I've been a long time reader of the forum and have learned so much from all of you, and I don't plan to stop. So thank you for that. Any advise, thoughts, or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Two photos attached :) Apologies for the poor quality. Thanks again!

The fat font looks great, I would have thought they were around in 1974.

The watch looks very clean, so it most likely has been serviced recently.

The fat font is generally more desirable among vintage collectors than a finer font bezel insert.

The serrations on the bezel itself looks very sharp and this may be indicative of the watch itself having very little usage, or a replacement bezel having been supplied.

That is a nice looking 5513. The dial would be considered a 5513 matte serif dial. The patina on the dial matches the hands and the pearl on the insert. As Steve pointed out the insert is a very nice fat font insert. An iconic vintage watch that will give you years of service. I would pressure test it, and wear it for the next 20 years.

Nice serif dial with awesome patina.
Great fat-font insert with the "kissing four" that is very sought after and nicer, imho, than a thin font insert. (released in the sixties though).

Thank you all for the feedback. I'm going enjoy this piece even more now. I've definitely caught the Vintage Sub Bug! But gonna take some time to take this one in before thinking about the next one.

Just curious, what was your first vintage piece and how did you come upon it?

Nice watch. I think your watch guy is right though. Insert looks good, but it appears it is from an earlier period (If kissing 4). Nice never the less...
