Upgrading datejust

I recently managed to get my datejust 41 mint green with jubilee/fluted bezel. Considering to possibly sell and upgrade to a submariner while the price is still good the datejust.

Any help on whether it's a good idea or not is appreciated.
Cheers

Depends on what your criteria for a watch is. If you like green dials more than black dials, then changing to a Sub is a bad idea. If you like 300m water resistance compared to 100m water resistance, then changing to a Sub is a good idea. But if you like dressy watches more than professional style watches, then changing to a Sub is a bad idea. The list is endless, so ultimately it comes down to what you like more.

Really tough to answer. Why did you buy the date just? Do you like the Sub more?

Wouldn’t consider that an upgrade … an upgrade to a datejust would be a day date.

Unless you hate your DJ41, I would keep it and buy the Submariner. There are completely different watches.
I am in the opposite situation as yours. I am waiting for a DJ41 (your exact configuration) to compliment my SubC.

Welcome to the forum.

You will be likely getting MSRP tops, unworn.
Whether this would be a good idea or not, from a financial standpoint, would depend on the price of the Submariner. Also you do not state which Submariner or Submariner date you're after.
In my opinion, purchasing a DJ in hopes of leveraging towards a contemporary Sub is a very poor choice.

With that said, a colored DJ41 goes nicely with a SubC/SubC Date. Consider keeping the DJ and adding the Sub of your fancy down the road. Worked for me, ymmv

It is about what you like and what you want. The DJ you have is special and the configuration you got it in might be the most popular. With that said a Rolex Diver, in any configuration, is a great watch and an icon. Not sure what the numbers look like but I like the DJ and if you want a diver there are so many options from other brands you can cover that base easily. But it is not a Rolex and that maybe the point, either positive or negative, depending on how you want to look at it.

I don't think the sub is an upgrade, but if you like it better then go for it. I would do it, since I prefer it to the DJ41.

I don’t think the Sub is an upgrade. That’s the wrong way of looking at it. They’re just harder to get and a bit more expensive on the grey market. That isn’t an “upgrade” though.

They’re ultimately completely different watches. I have both a DJ36 and a Sub Date and I love both. They suit different occasions and I honestly couldn’t live without either.

“Upgrade”? Lol they’re both basic pieces. Own the one YOU like better.
If you’re chasing clout, keep the green dial dj41. It’ll probably get more attention than a sub due to iconic rolex look and green dial.

Agreed! Definitely not an upgrade from a Rolesor DJ to a SS Sub.

Just depends on preferences. If you like the Sub better go ahead and do it, but that’s a pretty nice DJ.

I love my Sub but such a nice DJ I would probably just keep the DJ and try and add the Sub later just to have the best of both worlds.

Considering that the DJ in that dial configuration is a very nice watch, I would suggest keeping it and adding the Submariner when you can.

You shouldn’t have bought it if you didn’t want it.

Going to the Sub isn’t an automatic upgrade if you know what you wanted. It’s just a trade.

I would keep the DJ and only contemplate buying the Sub when you can add it as a second piece.

This is so sad that either hype and/or FOMO forces people to pay thousands on a watch that they don’t actually really want

Don’t be a flipper and be part of the problem, that’s my advice (and just my opinion)
The DJ you’ve chosen is the nicest combination out there, in my opinion. I’d definitely hold on to it. Also you did well to get it from an AD, so if they found out you’d flipped (and they often do find out), it could be a tricky conversation.

Keep that lovely DJ

Upgrading datejust

The Submariner is the greatest watch ever. The Datejust is the 2nd best watch ever. I think you need both.

Plus, the Sub and the DJ is the best 2 watch combo ever.

But seriously, if can only have one, I’d just stick with what you have and add a $150 G-Shock to go along with it.

I would definitely not consider the Submariner an upgrade over Datejust. Yes, it's a perfect watch but I personally feel it's overpriced for what it offers - a timing bezel. There are plenty of alternates at very good prices - Pelagos 39, Seamaster 300. The Submariner feels better than all the alternates, for sure, but the asking price has gone way too high, imo. I'd say, either a Sky Dweller or a Day Date is an upgrade to the datejust, or even a GMT Master II.
