Turned my collection into gold...Dream Rolex acquired

I bought my first Sub, a 14060M, in 2009. Since then, the Sub has just been “my watch”. Over the years I’ve had quite a few…different generations, different configurations, but I’ve always had a Sub. I can safely say it’s my favorite watch (as much as I tried to convince myself that it's the AP RO Jumbo. After 2010 or so the WG, blue dial/bezel 116619LB became the ultimate for me. The “someday” watch, the “someday” Sub…my end game Rolex. Late last year my desire to own a somewhat PM Sub could not wait any longer and I added a TT 126613LB. I never thought I’d own a TT watch. On paper…on the forum…I hated TT. Then I tried on the new 12 series and I was instantly smitten. Had to have it. I basically always planned for that to be a stepping stone towards my “grail” WG Sub. I was starting to creep up in price.

I began to look at my small collection and started thinking “this equals a WG Sub”. That was it. I love the new 12 series Subs (I think they are the greatest generation), but on paper…on the forums I did not like the new WG, Black dial, Blue bezel subs. I may have even said just a few days ago (Jan 18th) on a thread here that Rolex destroyed the WG Sub with the new generation, lol. Then I tried one on…see a pattern here? Haha. No way I could go back to the 11 series subs after owning two 12 series. I’d regret it for sure….

So…

My end game Rolex. My new daily watch.

For those curious, yes, I did liquidate my collection for this. Historically, up until late last year, I was a one watch guy. Have been since my first Rolex in 2009. I've always wanted to have multiple watches, but then I always end up wearing one watch more while the others sit. Tried having a small collection of four watches starting last year and while I did enjoy it...I still wanted a WG Sub with no way being able to "add" one like most here would suggest. So this is not new territory for me having just one watch that I love.

Huge congrats! So pumped for you. I truly believe it is the perfect Rolex. First of all it is a submariner, so if only one, the submariner is a no-brainer and icon of Rolex. Second, it is the best blue Rolex makes, and blue is a very versatile color if you were to own one watch. Third, the black dial on the sports models is Rolex. If you are going to have one, that black lacquer beautiful dial is the dial to own. Finally - I tried it on in person. The weight is a wonderful thing, but very wearable for an everyday watch. Photos do not do this watch justice, it has a beautiful white gold glow to it, and blings just enough to separate it from the SS models, without being too showy. It truly is one of the best, if only one, PM watches Rolex makes. Great decision!

Not as of yet....I don't imagine I will. That's the part I'm most excited about, honestly.

Thanks, man! I appreciate the convo we had about it.

I caught it in the mirror and the color looks nothing like SS....I was so surprised how different it is. Almost has a champagne like tint to it.

Huge congrats.

It is amazing how much our opinions of watches can change after trying them on the wrist.

I never liked the Daytona until I strapped one on. And there’s others I liked in pictures until I quickly changed my mind in the flesh.

Awesome!! I absolutely love it.
I think it’s a perfect watch to be a one watch.
I just got the 41 YG and if it was white gold it could easily be all I ever need. The yellow is a bit loud for an only watch.
Hope you enjoy it, I know you will.

I agree. If I ever went to one only I think it would be a full WG. Checks a lot of boxes.

For me, it may be the 116509 blue dial.

I also considered the YG because I really wanted the blue sunray dial from my 126613LB. No way I could daily the YG. I did try it on and really liked it, but I didn't think it was an only-watch.

What a beautiful watch. Congratulations.

I suspect others will slowly creep back into your collection though. There will be times or places where it just won't be prudent to wear that.

I don't see that happening. I haven't gone anywhere in the past 15 or so years where I worried about what watch I was wearing. Don't intend to start, now.

Oh, I’m probably no more than 40-50 miles from you (on the other side of Philly) in case you want to come try on the 116619… ya know, just in case…

I was hoping you got the 116619LB while reading your post. That blue dial would be a non-negotiable for me with a WG sub. Either way, congrats on getting your grail watch!

Up until they redesigned the case, this would have 100% been the 116619. After having this on for the day, I really think the black dial makes it way more versatile for daily wear. I wore a green sweater today on purpose and I don't think the watch clashes or anything. I think It'd be different with the shade of the dial on the 116619. I almost feel like I'd have to wear it with only complimentary tones. I felt that way with my 126613LB. I never wore it green or anything.
