So we can land a spacecraft on an asteroid 3.2 billion (with a B) kilometers away, but we can't desalinate water, which purported covers 3/4 of the Earths surface. Someone is lying, cheating, stealing or any combination of the three. The only argument is about CHOOSING to sustain or not.

Not sure if you knew this but many Navy bases have successfully implemented desalinization plants. Economics isn’t sound currently but it’s done at a lower cost than space exploration.

I'm all for it However, 10% of the world currently doesn't have access to clean water, and I would assume they're lacking some power in this choice. I'm not creating a doom and gloom theory and I understand this issue probably isn't going to affect anyone here in our lifetimes. Sorry to take this off topic.

Apologies, it was me that took it OT, but I feel it's a very important issue.

FWIW I was on holiday in Malta this summer, and all the running water on the island is desalinated seawater. Tastes a little weird, but you get used to it. I assume it takes energy to desalinate.

I was being a little facetious, in that of course we can desalinate water if we choose to. And it's INFINITELY more useful than space exploration. Sustainability is up to the powers that be.

Agreed. I'm working a project now to save 70 million gallons of water per year at one of our facilities. About a small town's annual consumption.

Water conservation is a real issue. Water purification works great, but it's very energy intensive. As energy prices rise, communities on the fiscal edge will not be able to purify water. Which, will cause a cascade of health and other problems in the community.

Same here. I eat a lot of chicken and fish during the week but I love a good steak every once in a while. I like a good veggie burger though too.

I found that cutting carbs was the best thing for my health.

Ice cream is meat isn't it? It comes from a cow and can be turned into veal.

I'm a pig, I can't cut out anything. It will probably get to me if the running doesn't kill me first

That is a great contribution to conserving water.

Without political implications, even fiscally sound communities shy away from “invisible” projects that improve a resource that taxpayers take for granted.

Clean air and clean water are tablestakes for our continued life on the planet.

I'm enjoying this discussion, especially the poker terms. Rake, implied odds and table stakes.....

Been vegetarian for nigh on 30 years. Have been both a healthy one and a pretty unhealthy one. Chips beer chocolate and cigarettes were a vegetarian way of life for many years.

Not a political choice for me, just something I naturally gravitated towards and works for me. Wife and son are not veggie, nor would I want them to be.

Occasionally I try and balance all the good my vegetarianism does for animals by kicking a squirrel or shouting at livestock.

As with everything it’s a supply and demand issue. I think it’s more important that people have access to good quality food rather than worry about whether or not it includes meat. Ate horse once (not a whole one) and it was delicious.

LOL, great post.

I've eaten horse a few times as well, when I was a kid in France. I seem to remember it's pretty good.

Yep!
We eat it regularly, I love it smoked on a sandwich or in a slow cooking meat stew.

haven't eaten meat in 7 years. As healthy as i have been since i was a college athlete. Being fat leads to depression

If you dont enjoy what you are eating no matter what it is, then yes, its a total drag. I happen to really enjoy my food choices though.

Eat meat, stay happy.

Farming/vegetarian arguments aside, I firmly believe a gathering of people from all walks of life around a feast of BBQ could lead to world peace.

I could easily (well, it wouldn't absolutely kill me) give up meat, but not fish or poultry. We do eat way too many carbs, I'm sure.
